Democracy For All - Except Taiwan (Bushies' State Department Kowtows To Communists Alert)

You can learn the answers to those questions by reading the astonishingly arrogant, presumptuous, finger-pointing, condescending lectures by Bush administration officials to the people of Taiwan for their audacity to hold a referendum on membership in the United Nations.

Several members of Bush's State Department this week launched blistering attacks on Taiwan's plan to hold a national referendum at the time of the presidential elections next March to gauge support for membership in the U.N.

But, according to Raymond Burghardt, chairman of the U.S. government's American Institute, a kind of faux embassy in Taiwan, the idea of the Taiwanese people expressing their opinion on such a matter could only provoke the tyrants in Beijing who have designs on conquering the prosperous and free island.

"Just the process of having a referendum will make it harder to develop relations across the Taiwan Strait," he explained.

Thomas Christensen, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, virtually accused President Chen Shui-bian of lying during his campaign when he promised not to change the name of the country, not to declare independence, not to call a referendum to change Taiwan's status and not to include a "two-state" doctrine in the Constitution.

Of course, Chen did none of those things with his support for a legal referendum placed on the ballot by the people – not him.

For his part, Burghardt acted like some shameless foreign despot trying to limit the aspirations and self-determination of the Taiwanese people.

Talk about audacity. Taiwan is not to be allowed to hold a free election. Because the Bush State Department fears the totalitarian despots in Beijing. So much for the Bush Administration's commitment to defend democracy and human rights everywhere - without exception.

Talk about audacity, don’t bother actually quoting the comments WND, simply make your own highly ignorant, hysteric accusations about what the diplomats said.

HERE is a clue for these Junk Media types. Unless you fully quote the statement with NO ellipses or redactions, rational Americans assumed you are lying to us in your article.

The only difference between the Right wing Junk Media and the Left Wing Junk Media is what they lie to us about.

If the Junk Media wants to ever regain it’s intellectual credibility, it needs to stop with these sorts of drama queen hysterics and get back to simply REPORTING the news. We, the American People, are MORE the capable for forming our OWN judgments on these issues without the help of these “Journalists”.

I do support what our President does. Its just that it should be less selectively applied. That they usually do the right thing does not mean I am an uncritical supporter of the Administration's policies. When they get it wrong, I call them on it. Because I love freedom and unlike the Left, I frankly think America's true friends, few as they are, deserve our full hearted support.

on this score (Taiwan’s quest for liberty and separation from communist China), Bush shows himself to be a duplicitous panderer. Perhaps, the foreign policy objectives elsewhere, and needing China’s tenuous help (or lack of meddling), override first principles here. Could also explain the supposed trust that Bush has publicly shown to Russia's’s Putin.

We don't like his Open Borders policies either. But I do respect the man. We don't think he's trying to harm the country unlike the Left which is infected by virulent BDS.

I refuse to believe a word of this until I see it in NewsMax.

I can't believe there are still people that haven't figured out that World Nut Daily is the National Enquirer of "conservative" politics.

Oh, and that Joe Farah is a loon.

I lived in Taiwan for 2 years and while I would like Taiwan to be an independent, internationally recognized state, we are just not there yet in the international world. The RealPolitik considerations of having Communist China 90 miles away across the Taiwan Strait with a huge army and nuclear weapons are something that cannot be ignored. The fact is that Taiwan is already independent. It has a thriving democracy where the people govern themselves without intervention from the ChiComs and the 17th largest economy in the world. Taiwan is doing well for itself and any act by the people of Taiwan to declare independence, or assert itself internationally will jeopardize both their democracy and their economy. In your haste to accuse G.W.B. of selling the Taiwanese down the river just to cozy up to the Communists in China, did you stop to consider that maybe he is trying to remind the Taiwanese of what they have to lose? If the Taiwanese do declare independence, they will be attacked by China. If we do not come to their aid (something that we should not do if the Taiwanese continue provoking China with their drive to be formally independent), Taiwan will lose all of their sovereignty to the Mainland. They will not even have the level of freedom that Hong Kong and Macao possess. The issue is not whether the Bush Administration is being hypocritical by not supporting democracy in Taiwan while going to war for democracy in other parts of the world. Taiwan already has a thriving democracy and Bush is trying to keep it that way by not provoking the ChiComs. Give him some credit.

They aren't infected with Bush derangement syndrome, truth is they just want to keep everyones eye off the ball..including their own. Bush is a favorite and convenient diversion. Bush was as close to a real Conservative as we may ever get again if the liberal media gets it's way.

Romney, Kerry, Clinton....What's the difference? They are not one of us. None of them give a crap about the unwashed masses. None of them. They are all pandering to China...all for different reasons but they are in this together.

It's time to think about bypassing the liberal media altogether before the business/socialist coalition turns this Country into a giant labor union (pre-Communism).
