"I rolled my window down and asked what happened. They said the bus driver apparently swore at them, took off and left the bus."

I’m picturing them sitting in the bus for 45 minutes a block away from their house waiting for their door-to-door escort.

Bus driver handled the situation wrong.

He should have called the police and had them take away the misbehaving kids.

I feel sorry for the good kids on the bus.

This guy's on my list of all-time great bus drivers, tied for first place with my other hero, Ralph Kramden.

Called the police? No...he should have drove them right back to the school and called the Principal and let him/her handle it.

Or if the Principal wasn't there, drive the bus to the Superintendant's office and let the moron at Student Services handle it.

Neither available? Then drive to the police station and let them handle it.

LOL... I’m not surprised if that’s the case. My point was these are ‘big kids’ that we’re talking about, not elementary kids.

I don’t know which I would have more trouble with as a parent:

That my kid was on a bus that the bus driver abandoned, or that my kid was on a busful of kids that was so bad that they caused a grown man to crack and react this way?

If this happened 30 years ago, the driver would never have to leave the bus. He would have reported the misbehaving kids who would have been banned from the school bus and would have gotten a serious spanking at home.

I feel for the bus driver but he should not have walked away like that. I would have changed course and headed for the police station and turned over the keys, uttering the famous words “take this job ...” But HEY, it was Rochester, New Hampster, right? Take them straight to Hillary’s HQ!!!

He could have handled it a lot worse:
Bus driver arrested for allegedly wielding knife

MARSHFIELD — Police have arrested a 66-year-old man for allegedly threatening elementary students on a school bus with a weapon.

Madison Elementary School Principal Greg Kaster said the incident occurred on Nov. 16. In the following weeks, four students approached Kaster about their bus driver showing a jack knife in a threatening manner at one of the students.

“The more we investigated, the more it didn’t look like they were making it up,” Kaster said.

No charges have been filed against the driver, but he is suspended until the investigation is completed, said Verlyn Randt, manager of Marshfield Bus Service.

I have to say I feel for the driver, too. Why weren’t the parents asking who threw the ice ball? My guess is that they are looking for a chance to get some easy money.

I’m siding with the bus driver.

I'm with you.

Many decades ago, when my kids were little, I took job as a bus driver. Back then, the driver could discipline in many ways, including stopping the bus and putting on the flashers to signal for aid - from cruisers or even truck drivers.

They could also ban a kid from the bus. The first time would be for 2 weeks and the kid could not ride again without the parents coming for a conference.

Next time - no more bus privileges.

Nowadays, no one's allowed to discipline the kids - and middle schoolers are the WORST - They're neither fish nor fowl = not little kids but far from grownup. They don't know who they are and they can get wild in a bunch.

You will notice that this parent whose son rides this bus wasn’t complaining about her child being unsupervised, but rather was concerned that the kids could’ve damaged the bus...
“Anything could have happened,” Mangold said. “God knows what they could have done to the bus.” Wonders never cease...

As someone mentioned these were Jr. High and High School Age kids. I don’t think the bus driver should’ve just walked away, but there would be nothing wrong with his refusal to take these kids home. If anything, he should’ve just pulled over and called the bus company and/or the school and/or the police... But, he probably was frustrated to the point that he just flat out didn’t care anymore... Kinda points to the kind of stuff these kids were pulling, IMHO...

LOL! I think that's why the driver took off.
