regardless of who’s at fault, the solution would be to have all students’ parents take a week of driving the bus in a rotation among the parents. The behavior might change over time.

No doubt the kids’ conduct serves to mitigate his responsibility, but ultimately the driver is wrong on this issue. He willingly accepted the job, and in this case was derelict in his duty.

Bus driver should not have left the kids.
HOWEVER there is no way on earth I would drive a bus with school kids. I suspect it was more than what most of us would consider *misbehavior*. Many kids are totally out of control these days, and one bus driver, who has to stay at the front and pay attention to the road cannot do much about kids who think rules are meant for other folks.
And, I strongly put blame on at least some of the parents. Go to almost any restaurant and you see children running around, screaming, bother other patrons and refusing to do anything their parents tell them to do. Imagine those same kids as middle schoolers.
Now, some of the kids probably weren’t doing anything wrong and they were put in danger. That’s the sad part of this story.

The district administrators are so out of touch with reality it’s unbelievable.

Worse yet, these are the people in charge of "zero tolerance" in our schools. I've eyewitnessed an out-of-control, eyes bulging, veins in neck popping, district supervisor (at the Appoquinimink School District) go off in an unprovoked tirade in front of five people and get away with her verbal abuse and intimidation. The parents complained in writing to the School Board. The Board denied them a hearing about her behavior and refused to do anything about it and chose to cover up instead. No one else would hire someone with a horrendous temper like that.

One of the Board members (Joanne Christian) recently ran as a Republican in the special State senate race (she lost). All her political brochures claimed her to be a proponent of "open government." Yeah, sure! They closed the 'government' as far as those families were concerned.

These people are never held accountable for anything.

Where’s the “zero tolerance” when the district administrators screw up?

Should have done what my bus driver did, pull over radio for the police, sit back and watch the fun begin

Well, if the driver isn’t allowed to discipline the unruly or throw them off the bus, then he doesn’t have the tools necessary to maintain order on the bus. I can’t say I blame him. I would never want to be a school bus driver.

He willingly accepted the job, and he willingly quit. His timing wasn't the best, but unless under contract, he, like nearly every working American, has the right to quit a job any time he wishes.

I side with the driver. Schools are afraid to discipline kids because of lawsuits, and the kids know it. The ideal school bus would have constraints to keep the kids in their seats, and a sound-proof barrier between them and the driver.

Make it bullet-proof, too.
