Huckabee plays the woe-is-me card
The Anchorage Daily News ^ | December 20, 2007 | Liz Sidoti

Under fire, Mike Huckabee countered mounting criticism from GOP presidential rivals Thursday by playing the woe-is-me card - and then hitting back by suggesting they lack substantial agendas of their own.

"Everything but the kitchen sink is being thrown at me," the Republican leader in Iowa polls complained at nearly every stop. "If the only thing some of these candidates have to run on is what's wrong with somebody else, they must not have much of a platform to talk about."

The former Arkansas governor recently soared from behind the pack of GOP presidential candidates to overtake Mitt Romney in Iowa and now finds himself in an intense battle with the former Massachusetts governor. Fred Thompson, the one-time Tennessee senator trying to turn his soured fortunes around in Iowa, also has assailed Huckabee.

At one stop Thursday, Huckabee told an audience that the flood of "dishonest and desperate" criticisms were akin to candidates taking a hammer to his kneecaps. "It's amazing I'm still walking," Huckabee quipped to laughter.

With Iowa's caucuses coming up on Jan. 3, the race is growing more heated each day. Polls show Huckabee ahead, but his advantage has narrowed over the past week as Romney has cast him as a liberal on taxes and started running TV ads claiming he's soft on crime and immigration.

Huckabee lags his top opponents in money and manpower, and winning Iowa is crucial for him to continue his bid for the presidency. He used a four-day bus tour of the state this week to try to go on offense against Romney.

"If you want a president who gets elected because he attacks the other guy, I'm probably not going to be your choice," he said.

Sorry, Huckster, you might just have to take some positions yourself, as Fred’s already been very blunt and forthright about his.

The mainstream media is getting tired of him and now they’re moving back over to McCain.

They’re just looking for someone to support who has the best chance of getting crushed by Hillary in the general election. They couldn’t care less about conservatism or the Republican Party.

The mainstream media is getting tired of him

I think the MSM is getting SCARED of him. They pumped him up because they thought he was the worst and weakest candidate of the bunch, and they wanted the Republicans to lose.

Then suddenly they woke up and realized they had created a Frankenstein Monster who represented all their worst fears.

Which is just as well, because we need all the help we can get to knock him out of the race. He would be a disaster for the country and the party.

Gee, does this remind anyone else of someone who attributed all his criticism to a “vast right-wing conspiracy”? I have yet to see the Huckster or his supporters actually try to answer any of the criticisms - it is so much easier to vilify the critics.

"If you want a president who gets elected because he attacks the other guy, I'm probably not going to be your choice," he said.

If you want a president who sends his underlings to attack the other guy's religion, on the other hand...

Huckabee is a disgrace. We need to stop letting jerks like him hide behind his "I'm more religious than you!" crap and denounce them, even if we like their stands on abortion.

I think that was a reference to the Hucksters NY Times smear of Romney - don’t the Mormons believe Jesus and Satan are brothers? I’m not saying they do, just asking.

So was Huck's "innocent question" about Mormons.

Satire is lost on some people.

I don’t know what the Mormons believe , and don’t care . I will not sit by and let people smear Baptists with idiotic assertions .

I don’t like Romney , but I’ve never lashed out at his religion .

Romney has way too many issues to attack , his religion is not one of them .

Romney has been playing the victim card and claiming the religious bigotry. Team Romney have been the biggest instigators in religious division in this campaign and it should be shunned .
