I think that a Romney/Thompson ticket would be formidable...not to assume that either Mitt will win the nomination nor that Fred would be interested in the VP if asked.

My guess is that the dem ticket will be Obama/Clinton(yes, in that order)

and possibly a third-party McCain/Lieberman

"He’d make a great vice president.

There's a ball in Huckabee's court right now - Huckabee could quickly say, "If that's an offer, I accept!"

“Each one brought to the ticket things that were lacking, real or perceived, to the top ticket guys, Reagan, Clinton and Bush”

Huckster shores up Flip Mitt’s credibility with the crowd that sends 10% of their paycheck (gross) to a televangelist?

I just can’t believe the Republican voters are actually going to stomach Romney. The establishment wants him, but he is so plastic, so contrived, so unable to articulate without prepared notes that I have to believe he will implode. Rudy is done, put a fork in him. McCain - I agree, he can’t rally the party. That leaves Thompson and Huckabee, the only other candidates other than Ron Paul and Hunter, left. I think the real story that no one is talking about is the battle between Thompson and Huckabee for the social conservatives in the party. Romney’s fall has been due to his inability to “close the deal” with social conservatives.

Fred Thompson would bring all the conservative bonafides to any ticket headed by a northeaster as Huckabee, plus he would bring the big thing the Huckster lacks: maturity and conviction.

Could I swallow hard and support a Romney-Huckabee ticket? Probably, if the Huckster was kept on a short enough leash and carefully taught that (a)raising taxes is the worst way to grow an economy and (b)there's more to foreign policy than giving Tyson's an unlimited supply of cheap labor from Latin America and making George Bush look like Tom Tancredo by comparison in his efforts to please Mexico.

Among the first tier candidates, though, I would much rather see a Thompson-Romney ticket. If Fred pledged to serve one term only, that might allay fears of the mushy middle who think he's too old. It might also allay fears of those suffering from Mormon Derangement Syndrom that Romney will take his marching orders from Salt Lake City, an idiotic and irrational fear considering that most of his social views are to the left of mainstream Mormonism.

The worst possible alternative would be Guilani-Huckabee which I could not support in any combination.

But I also think that the issues that we’re dealing with today are very important issues and it’s important for people to understand where we stand on issues.”

Mitt, where you stand "today" is problematic enough. But the real problem is where you stood "yesterday," and the fact that no reasonable person can have ANY confidence in where you might stand "tomorrow."

“Sure, he’s a wonderful person,” Romney said. “He’d make a great vice president.

No he wouldn't, but he would make a great governor of a liberal state like you.....

“He’d make a great vice president”

Brilliant.

Damning w/ faint praise.

Thinking of the quote by John Nance Garner, “The vice presidency isn’t worth a pitcher of warm spit”

I wanted to see a picture of Huck fat for a long time before I saw this one. They are hard to come by, but some industrious FReeper found it.

I was starting to kind of like Romney, but he just keeps doing himself in. Thinking Huck would make a good vp is as dumb as consulting your attorneys about war.

I didn’t know much about him but I too have felt vaguely nauseous whenever I saw him starting long ago when he announced or perhaps even before. I think before I just thanked God he’d never be president. I’d sooner vote for Jesse Ventura.

I don’t think Hillary would take second place but you can never be 1000% certain about these things. Would she still be seen as presidential material at age 69 in 2016? I also can’t imagine Hillary picking Obama as he would be seen as overshadowing her. A more likely choice for her would be Gov Richardson.

As far as third parties go I think we are more likely to see an independent run by the left wing Mayor Bloomberg than by McCain.

“Does Romney have any moral convictions at all?”

He thinks it is immoral to lose an election.

I don’t have a clue, but if things keep heading the direction they are, she’s toast. I think it’s becoming clear to all that she’s just not electable, at least not now. I could see a back-room deal made where she agrees to play second-fiddle, which at least gets her in. Then she has time to “prove her presidential-ness” (i know that’s not a real word)

Think about it...wouldn’t her as VP be just as bad? In fact, in some ways it would be worse because it would keep the dark cloud of a potential of a future Presidency looming over our heads for another 4-8 years. Ugh. Perish the thought!

Oh, last thing. That ticket would explain the whole Oprah thing. IMHO

‘Huckster shores up Flip Mitt’s credibility with the crowd that sends 10% of their paycheck (gross) to a televangelist?’

I don’t think Romney is suggesting Huckabee would be ‘his first choice’.

I think that what he’s saying here is in the end we will have to rally around whoever the GOP primary winner is, and that we are losing sight of that fact right now.

Remember how the Left used George H Bush’s comment about ‘voodoo economics’ against Reagan til the day he died?

Yeah, you’re probably right about Bloomberg being more likely than McCain. But ever since the dems turning on Lieberman in 06, I’ve had the gut feeling that he is going to play a big role in the final outcome of the election. I also think McCain is feeling betrayed more and more by his party. I’ve thought about them forming a third-party ticket since last spring but really thought it very unlikely. Then the endorsement happened and I googled the two names together and found that there’s actually been alot of speculation about the idea for some time. So who knows? Maybe there’s something to it.
