Romney: Huckabee Would Make A Great VP
CBS News Blog ^ | 12/20/2007 | Scott Conroy

ORANGE CITY, IOWA -- Mitt Romney was asked at a town hall meeting about was why he has been making so many negative comments about Mike Huckabee lately and whether he thought the former Arkansas governor would make a good vice president.

“Sure, he’s a wonderful person,” Romney said. “He’d make a great vice president. But I also think that the issues that we’re dealing with today are very important issues and it’s important for people to understand where we stand on issues.”

The event was held at Quatro Composites, a company that makes high-tech products for the U.S. military.

As members of the media entered the building, we were told to sign in and check a box indicating whether we were U.S. citizens. Katie Connolly — a Newsweek reporter of Australian citizenship — did not make the cut. She was told that International Traffic in Arms (ITAR) regulations required that non-U.S. citizens not be permitted to enter the facility. Connolly retired to the press van for the duration of the event, no doubt missing her boomerang and pet wallaby more than ever.

So, he is menacingly terrible on issues of immigration, taxes and so forth, but hey, if I bite the big one in office, he'd make a great president! Does Romney have any moral convictions at all?

This is exactly what we Arkansas FReepers have been saying since the day the Huckster got into the race. He’s positioning himself to be a VP candidate to supposedly “balance” the ticket for a northeastern RINO candidate like Romney or Rudy, to suck in the southern vote. I so hope FReepers and other conservatives see through this facade before they make a big mistake. The Huckster’s history in office is far different from what he says are his views on the political stump.

LOL. It’s a joke, son. Sort of like Obama telling Hillary that he would use her as an advisor.

It would be a deal killer for me. I couldn’t stand to see his smirking mug on the television for four to eight years. Get him out of public life.

From what I understand (at a distance) is that Arkansas politics are a swamp. The RATs would like nothing more than for us to field a RINO and a crook. It would make Her Thighness look better by way of comparison.

I agree. People are reading too much into this, IMO. What’s he supposed to say, “My principal opponent would SUCK as a VP?” How do you think that would go over with the press?

You are right. They usually say complimentary things about one another. However, if Mitt is at the top of the ticket it does not sweeten the deal for me if Huckabee is his running mate. I would rather see Fred Thompson as VP with Romney. Or another real conservative. Perhaps a new fresh face like Rep. Mike Pence. Or if they need someone from the deep south, I like Gov. Sonny Perdue.

Get him out of public life.

I've been trying since the day he announced, but there appear to be a lot of folks easily swayed by a slick talker.

Really I don't see Arkansas politics as any better or worse than any other state (with the exception of Louisiana, LOL!) that's predominately democrat controlled, it just that the Huckster was suppose to be our one breath of fresh conservative air when he became governor, yet by the time he left office the stench from his taxes, pardons, and his growing sense of entitlement was greater than when he started. He went from being a preacher and pastor to become a full fledged professional politician.

The transformation sickened me of his actions and I want to see him removed from the public feed trough, sent home, and not rewarded for his gift of gab and turning a quick line.

I’d say Romney understands that once the primaries are over, the GOP will need to rally around whoever wins in the end, and his comments are designed to remind us all of this simple fact.

Vice President’s aren’t choosen for ‘ability’ as much as they are choosen to shore up the top of the tickets perceived or real weaknesses. Thats how we got Bush the Elder in 1980. Thats how we got Al Gore in 92. Thats how we got Dick Cheney in 2000.

Each one brought to the ticket things that were lacking, real or perceived, to the top ticket guys, Reagan, Clinton and Bush.

A political party that doesn’t do this, doesn’t win the general election cycle, folks.
