Elderly Man Jailed For Trashy Yard Gets Cleanup Help From Guards

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- An 86-year-old man jailed for seven days has an unlikely group of people making sure he doesn't land in jail again: the prison staff.

John Allen was sent to jail after being convicted of violating a Union Township law stating private property must be clear of junk, rubbish, garbage and unruly grass.

Union Township Police Chief Joseph Lombardo said Allen refused to adhere to warnings to clean up his property, which was so filled with junk it had become an eyesore to complaining neighbors. He also refused the help of an organization that assists the elderly and he rejected offers from his neighbors.

Allen said he doesn't like having local people in his home. But after seven days in jail, he softened his position.

During the past three days, Allen has allowed the jail staff to clean up his property. They have filled a garbage bin to the brim with old furniture and other household items. Once they are finished inside, and the snow melts, they will get to the yard, including mowing the high grass.

unruly grass

Typical political writing. So, what is their definition of unruly grass?

Grass is too high?

Grass is too low?

Blades of grass are arguing with each other?

Blades of grass are grouping in gangs?

Grass is singing 'Give peace a chance' all night long after smoking one of their own??

Your attempt to protect the English language is appreciated, but if “unruly” is the language of the statute/ordinance, it simply means “not managed.”

Is this for real?
In the worst case, I can see the town bringing a civil lawsuit, but putting the old man in jail??? Unbelievable.
Something must be missing here, or maybe I really am happy not to be back in the USA :(

It’s an awful story and it’s a sweet story.

Sometimes being independent means being willing to accept the kindness of strangers (I must be channeling Blanche Dubois today).

Don’t try this where illegal aliens have moved in; those broke down cars are going to stay in the front and back yards.
The city would get hammered by the ACLU and other criminal protection organizatiion.

Sadly, one of the hardest things for the elderly to accept is the loss of independence they had in their younger days. Here’s hoping he’ll have learned his lesson and accept help when offered.

When we lock up 86 year-old American citizens in jail for this kind of insipid nonsense, it tells me that the American judicial system is severely broken and that America, as the bastion of freedom in the world, has gone the way of the dinosaurs and dodo birds.

What a sad statement about a once great nation. However, kudos to the guards who have more honor and integrity than those responsible for the judicial system.

So, what is their definition of unruly grass?

"Unruly" grass is grass that makes demeaning comments at passersby that are intended to embarrass and/or humiliate. Because their free speech is protected (as a protected minority), there is little that the judicial system can do to limit to prevent their verbal assault.

Apparently, locking up their 86 year-old owner is about the only remedy!!

Yup, tossing him in the slammer for any length of time sure seems beyond the pale. However,

He also refused the help of an organization that assists the elderly and he rejected offers from his neighbors.

His pride may be the source of his problems.

I hope, as I advance in years, that I will always be able to tell the difference between pride and dignity.

I can understand why this man doesn’t want any locals on his property. The locals delight in imprisoning an old man because they don’t like the look of his property.
