Are You Planning to Retire Abroad?
various

Posted on 12/21/2007 12:02:09 PM PST by quesney

I've come across a number of reports and websites lately about the growing number of older Americans and Brits (especially Brits) retiring abroad and even younger Americans wanting to live abroad for lifestyle and business reasons. Also reports about the fast growth of "medical tourism" (going to places like India and Panama to get cheaper health care).

Which makes me wonder: Is this the sort of thing a lot of any Freepers out there are seriously considering?

Just some of the websites I've noticed about this issue recently, including real estate agencies in Central America that seem to be soliciting foreigners directly:

I'm considering such a move myself. Any thoughts?

My thoughts are pretty obvious and I’m sure you’re considering them already. Better look very carefully at the availability and quality of medical care offered by the place you’re considering. Other than that, I can certainly think of some nice spots to live outside the US.

If Hillary's elected I might consider going to a country that's still free before she has time to turn us into a socialist utopia.

My broad is still in great condition.

I’ll never retire her!

I wouldn’t be moving to South America, but I have often entertained thoughts of Eastern Europe. Not sure how hospitable the would be, though.

Yes, I’m not a fan of gender modification.

“Are You Planning to Retire Abroad?”

No, we’ll both just keep working.

My in-laws went to Costa Rica, but when everyone else “found” crime and prices both rose.

They now rent a place in Nicaragua for the winter. It’s cheaper to fly down there and rent a place, than it is to buy heating oil here in Maine.

I will live in the USA until it officially becomes annexed as part of Mexico.

This is still the world’s best country.

We met a number of Brits in Greece last summer...permanently leaving their country for lots of reasons but mainly crime, culture etc.

We are thinking about it too at some point in the future.

It really depends on the political culture here.

Am I planning to retire a broad?

Yep, Hillary Clinton in 08....(chuckle)

Seriously, nope, I’m retiring here in the USA.

I already have my place on a really nice part of the southern Baja. Vacation home for now, but I could retire there any time I wanted.

I just received my citizenship and to move from the U.S.?

I’d rather eat glass thank you.

I’ve made my decision, my commitment and I’ll stay put.

In this land there is something for every taste and one never knows whether you will land in the middle of some dictator’s overthrow or militia uprising....

With all it’s warts, I love this nation.

I looked.

There’s no place out there where expat Americans won’t be made into soup if the US falls. There are things over the horizon that will shake the whole world.

Best you can do is stay here and keep fighting for America.

My dad always claims he's going to retire / trade my mother in for two women half her age. I'm considering the same for my 29 year old...uhh...nevermind.

Europe’s too expensive for me. Eastern Europe is cheaper though and much more traditional. Not as corrupt as what Western Europe has become.
