Arizona City Cops Ask Citizenship Proof
New York Times ^ | December 23, 2007

PHOENIX (AP) -- Police in suburban Scottsdale have begun routinely asking for proof of citizenship from every suspect they arrest and turning those who are in this country illegally over to federal immigration officials.

The procedure was started Oct. 15, a result of the September killing of Phoenix police officer Nick Erfle by an illegal immigrant, Erik Jovani Martinez.

Scottsdale police had arrested Martinez on a misdemeanor charge 16 months earlier but they released him then because they didn't know he was an illegal immigrant who had been twice deported.

Erfle's killing ''caused us to look at what were asking suspects,'' Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said. ''If we arrest someone and then find that we called ICE (Customs and Immigration Enforcement) and they put a hold on them, then we know they have been deported and are back again.''

Martinez was later killed by police after he stole a car and took a hostage, authorities said.

Now police in the affluent suburb ask every suspect about their citizenship, have ICE agents pick up those who are in this country illegally, and keep a database of possible illegal immigrants in case they turn up again.

While I am glad this is taking place it pisses me off to no end that they had to wait until a cop was killed before doing the right thing. It's ok for illegals to slaughter ordinary citizens but god forbid they kill a cop!

That said, I hope they keep this up.

[God bless the Phoenix police department]

The Chief of Police has fought and is fighting this tooth and nail. The Mayor Phil “Flash” Gordon just recently ‘saw the light’ when it became obvious his pending run for Gov. of AZ didn’t stand a chance in hell of going anywhere unless he took a stance on the illegal problem.

"I have a real problem having to prove I’m not guilty -vs- the assumption of innocence until proven guilty."

That's nice.

If stopped for a traffic infraction, you have to prove you have a valid driver's license.

Is that a problem, too?

Born In East L.A.!

."Hispanic-American Rudy (Cheech Marin) is just having a fine day until an immigration raid as he's wrongfully prosecuted as an illegal immigrant. He doesn't know a word of spanish and forgot to bring his wallet and ID, he's forced to be deported to Mexico as he must find a way to get back to the U.S. even if he has to work for a club owner (Daniel Stern) for money."

Can you say, "reasonable attorney fee" and "class action" under 42 U.S.C. 1983 and 42 U.S.C. 1988?

Well, if you want to clean up your back yard, you will have to do a little foot work to help your state clean it up!
What's big deal making a copy of your Birth Certificate/Green Card and keep it in your wallet?...valid DL=no problem...have a nice day.

A friend of mine who was for years head of the ACLU in Marin County, California, (I kid you not - he was also a field grade Army reserve M.P. officer) said that most of the help calls he got came from Marin County law enforcement agencies who were being pressured to do wildly unconstitutional things by idiot lefty local government officials.

Illegals do more than cut lawns. They have to be able to be witnesses, offer testimony in court, etc.

Telling 300,000+ illegals in Phoenix that they now must avoid the police, never come forward as witnesses, never report crimes, and refuse to show up in court, is only shooting ourselves in the foot.

The result will be an underground barrio in which
the police get no info, can’t follow crime, can’t prosecute crimes, and for justice the locals have to turn to gangs.

This is why the custom for decades has been that local police and courts function without asking for citizenship info.

Which led to us being colonized by tens of millions of foreigners from the bordering nation, moving here illegally.

Think that one has been to the courts, it's a non starter.

That nails it. Nothing else needs be said!!
