Four Pinocchios for Romney on MLK ("Well, it was somebody who certainly looked like him.")
Washington Post ^ | December 23, 2007 | Michael Dobbs "The Fact Checker"

Posted on 12/23/2007 2:18:05 PM PST by greyfoxx39

"They [George Romney and Martin Luther King] were hand in hand...They led the march. We all swung our hands, and they held their hands up above everybody else's."

Quote distributed by the Mitt Romney campaign.

-SNIP-

After news reports challenged Mitt Romney's repeated accounts of his father marching with Martin Luther King, his campaign put a reporter from Politico in touch with eyewitnesses who claimed to have seen the former Michigan governor "hand in hand" with the civil rights leader. But their memories are almost certainly flawed as contemporaneous news reports show that King was addressing a meeting in New Jersey at the time the eyewitnesses supposedly saw him in Grosse Pointe, MI.

The Facts

-SNIP-

Romney did show up at a smaller march the following Saturday in the exclusive Grosse Pointe suburb of Michigan to protest housing discrimination. But contemporaneous news reports show that King had left the Michigan area by then, and was traveling in the Northeast

-SNIP-

"I was fifteen feet away from them [Romney and MLK]," said Robertson, 64, who attended Grosse Pointe high school. "You don't forget that kind of thing."

I called up one of the eyewitnesses cited by Politico and the Romney campaign, Ashby Robertson.

-SNIP-

When I told Robertson that news reports placed Martin Luther King in New Jersey at the time, he replied: "Well, it was somebody who certainly looked like him."

Fred is barely ahead of Alan Keyes in Iowa, 3% to 2%. That's with Rep. King's endorsement and backing.

Despite nonstop attacks by MDSers on his honesty, Mitt is up four percent and Huck is down five; MItt's now within the MOE.

I suggest you worry about Willard’s well-deserved reputation for liberalism and lies. His negatives are at 47%, just like Hillary.

You all keep talking about the civil rights record of George Romney.

They only reason we're talking about it is because the Mitt haters are attempting to tarr his family as racists because they happen to belong to a Church that didn't ordain blacks until 1978. His Dad's record refutes this spurious charge.

We're looking at Myth's record - and it's flipped-flopped continuously over the years depending on what office he's running for.

He changed his mind on abortion. People grow. As a pro-lifer, you should be happy such a man has come to our side. I know I am.

Abortion isn’t the only issue that he’s “changed his mind” on. And, yes, I’m always happy when someone comes to the pro-life side, but that doesn’t make them POTUS material. I’m sorry, but your candidate has had to many back and forth flips and lies to suit me.

Oh - btw, I’ve never called Myth a racist. A liar - yes!

I suppose you have never heard of poetic lisence.

Just like many things in the Bible aren't intended to be taken as to be strictly literal, not everything in a political speach is ever intended to be taken to be strictly literal.

I have to tell you, I've heard a lot of BS in my day, but this is about the best spin that I've ever heard from anyone about a blatant lie out of the mouth of a politician.

Have I told you that I look just like Cheryl Teigs. Just using a little "poetic license"...yup..that's it.....poetic license. You can't be that gullible/stupid/naive.

Who cares about national ranking (where Fred is fifth, barely in double-digits). States decide who is the nominee, and the key states are IA, NH, MI. 2-3 top candidates survive to SC.

Fred is around 3-6% in Iowa (yeah, SV poll had him at 16%, maybe you believe that and discount every other poll).
In NH, he is around 3.2% (average), in MI around 5-7%. If somebody believes, this is the path to nomination, I salute you!

“Did you even read this stuff?”

Deny. Deny. Deny.

You Romney haters are sounding more and more like Democrats every single day.

“Will Romney ever call these bigots “racist”?”
Were the Baptists racists because the Baptists once held to similar beliefs?

That is flogging a long-dead horse.

Bush still won.

Which is exactly what I said.

If you want to say "Bush still won" that would be accurate.

What you said originally was not.
