I remember reading that when Social Security was first proposed way back when, that most Americans did NOT want a government number to be used to identify them. The government, of course, said that would never happen.
Fast Forward. These days you can't even open an account ANYWHERE without that Social Security Number.

Yup, my Social Security card states "not to be used for identification purposes".
Yeah, right. Had to give it to renew my driver's license last month.

I got my SS card in the late 50s. In clear white letters on a blue was the legend “NOT FOR INDENTIFICATION”.

I still have my original Social Security Card. Printed right across the bottom: "For Social Security Purposes -- Not for Identification." How times have changed!
