Southwest Airlines donated about 200 tickets to the Laredo-based 436th Chemical Company, 36th Infantry Division of the Texas Army National Guard this week after the soldiers' deployment was delayed at the last minute. The 171 soldiers had been scheduled to train this week at Fort Bragg, N.C., before deployment. None would have been able to spend time with their families for Christmas.
Cortez heard about the delay and realized there would be a break during which soldiers could get some much-needed family time. That's how "Operation Home for Christmas" got started.
Butch Cope, a spokesman for Southwest Airlines, said that because most of the soldiers were based in Texas, the company donated round-trip tickets from North Carolina to Dallas, San Antonio and Austin.
