Here is the full sentence, from the article:
It's unknown why the homeowner had a handgun, Petersen said.In other words, that brilliant statement was from the Kent police spokesperson. So glad I don't live in Kent.

It's unknown why the homeowner had a handgun, Petersen said. Okay, let me help you with that. Try this: He was a free citizen of a still moderately free country.
Works for me ....

“It’s unknown why the homeowner had a handgun,”
It is his Constitutional RIGHT to keep and bear arms.

The 28-year-old homeowner used his own gun to shoot the suspected intruder, said Kent police spokesman Paul Petersen. It's unknown why the homeowner had a handgun, Petersen said.If I had a Police chief that ignorant and arrogant,
I'd be armed.....

I wonder if he hit the suspect with all six rounds.

I also live on the East Hill of Kent and want to thank this homeowner for protecting my property as well as his. Another thug off the streets, the way I see it! Merry Christmas!

You would think with all the killings of home invaders in the news these days, the message would get through to these idiots. When you refer to "idiots", you can be refering to both:
- the intruders who don't seem to be reading--much less understanding--these articles by the bleeding-heart media dolts, and
- the bleeding-heart media dolts themselves who are writing these weakling articles

I think he had a gun because he had a broken sliding-glass door and no telling who might have come into his home through the broken sliding-glass door.

Such a happy ending (teary eyed). wasted ammo. 2 to the chest one to the head! Keep a round or two in case the perp gets up.
Shooter needs range time.

It's unknown why the homeowner had a handgun, Petersen said.Because, although it is less satisfying than a baseball bat, it is more effective at killing intruders...

Homeowner used own gun to kill Kent manYeah, you would have thought he would have used a stolen gun or a police revolver.
To: Horatio Gates
Here is another example of superb gun control. The homeowner, using his own gun, hit exactly what he was aiming at. He saved the state of Washington a lot of money. Now no jail time or court time is necessary. There will be no need to appoint a defense attorney for this criminal. He will now be tried in the court of his Maker.
The second amendment to our Constitution as intended by our founding fathers has become a reality. Score: Homeowner 1, Criminal 0.

Wonder if they tried to figure out why the home-invader was invading other people’s homes... Doubt it.
To: Horatio Gates
"suspected intruder"SUSPECTED?!!!"
"...he walked in the door and found the stranger inside his home, police said."
"...A man and woman came home to their condo on Kent's East Hill at 6 p.m. Saturday to find another man inside."
When that happens what do you say?
Something like: "I suspect you are an intruder?"
I say the facts don't leave any doubt.
The dead criminal was, in fact, an intruder.
Now he is a dead intruder.
