Reliving the Florida recount (TV movie produced by Democrats)

Reliving the Florida recount

One of the most highly anticipated political telefilms being released next year is “Recount,” a fast-paced depiction of the behind-the-scenes drama that took place in Florida during the disputed 2000 Gore-Bush election.

[snip]

Earlier this year, the possibility was raised that this “Recount” might be swayed and history rewritten because writer Strong and executive producers Paula Weinstein and Sydney Pollack, as well as HBO Films President Colin Callender, are all Democratic supporters.

“There have been many incarnations of the script,” the HBO representative said in response to questions about literary license taken in the film.

Still, HBO expects many of the real-life figures featured in the film will help promote the project once they see a final cut.

“We’re veterans in doing these projects,” said the HBO rep. “We’ve done our homework.”

Yes, that is what I meant. Didn’t want to sound like a whining liberal.

A very good summary of Gore's attempted election fraud. I recall, though, that the Panhandle is in the Central time zone, not Eastern, so this section should read "an hour and eleven minutes left to vote, yes?

"I believe the Palm Beach fiasco was Democrat vote fraud gone awry. Remember that, to have a chance, Gore needed to sweep tight contests in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida to reach the White House. By 7 p.m. Eastern, the television networks, likely with a few tipped off in advance to the grand scam, hastily called Gore the winner in Michigan and Pennsylvania to establish the Gore momentum. At 7:49 p.m. Eastern, while the conservative Florida panhandle had eleven minutes left to cast votes, the networks proclaimed Gore the winner in Florida. This in spite of the fact that the three states were expected to be close and easy Bush wins in states like North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia took much longer for the networks to project a winner.

I remember reading in Bill Sammons' book that Bush voters in the Panhandle driving to vote turned around with PLENTY of time left to vote. Just a small nit - my blood still boils, thinking about how close we came.

Looking at that butterfly ballot again, I can see how near-sighted Bush voters could have easily punched in Buchanan’s hole instead.

The rest of the 3000+ Buchanan votes I believe were Dem fraud gone wrong.

If they do, it will be as a “Republican riot” with redneck crackers attempting to intimidate the selfless civil servants into violating their duty.

KarlInOhio: Will they cover the attempt to hold an illegal secret meeting by a county board of elections (I forget which county) with Republicans outside the door pounding and chanting "Let us in, let us in"? No, I didn't think so.

Chesley: If they do, it will be as a “Republican riot” with redneck crackers attempting to intimidate the selfless civil servants into violating their duty.

For the record, they did. And they spun it that the Dade County people were trying to conduct it in an atmosphere of dignity, and not a media circus, as occurred in the other states. As for "redneck crackers," they didn't the protesters in that scene that way, but they sure did at other times throughout the movie.

Mark my words: Laura Dern may get a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her over-the-top and cartoonish portrayal of Katherine Harris as an easily-manipulated evangelical bimbo that EVERYBODY laughed at behind her back. Of course, the performance bore no resemblance to Harris (nor anyone intelligent enough to stand upright and speak simultaneously), but remember that Hollywood loves Al Gore so much that they found a reason to give him an Emmy last year.

If this was Sydney Pollack's last film, that's a shame. Kind of like Eyes Wide Shut being Stanley Kubrick's opus.
