Statewide Poster And Poetry/Prose Exhibit: "Global Warming – What Can We Do?" - Illinois EPA
Illinois Environmental Protection AgencyNews Release ^ | Illinois EPA Staff

Posted on 12/27/2007 6:43:04 PM PST by gridlock

We invite your students to participate in the annual Environmental Pathways statewide poster and poetry/prose exhibit. The theme of the 2008 event will be “Global Warming – What Can We Do?” focusing on the importance of clean air and protecting our environment.

We ask that you use our educational packet, “Environmental Pathways - Youth Investigating Pollution Issues in Illinois,” in your classroom during the month of January. Following this year's theme, emphasis will be on air pollution issues and global warming.

We believe that the creation of posters and written works gives your students an opportunity to express and share, on a deeper and more personal level, what they have learned. The student exhibit also draws attention to environmental issues.

We recommend that you have a school exhibit of your students' works. Ask students and faculty to vote for their favorite entries. Then send the Illinois EPA the top four posters and top four poetry/prose entries (representing the school) for inclusion in the statewide exhibit.

Students whose works have been chosen for the exhibit, together with their parents and teachers, will be invited to an awards reception in Springfield. The finalists will receive certificates and ribbons. Twelve students (six in each category) will be given special recognition and will each receive a $50 savings bond and an environmental reference book for his or her school's library. Following the recognition reception, the works will remain on display at the Illinois EPA April 7 through May 5.

The top twelve entries also will be displayed on the Illinois EPA's web site providing additional recognition for the winning entries as well as promoting the program.

To participate in the poster and poetry/prose contest you will need the participation packet which contains the rules and necessary forms. Please read the timetable below and note important dates and deadlines. If you have previously participated in the poster contest please take time to complete the poster contest survey.

We couldn’t do anything as individuals even if the tenet of human caused global warming were accepted.

Any oil, gas or coal not refined and used in the United States would likely be used elsewhere or by someone else.

The only practical way to reduce global CO2 emissions would be to reduce production of fossil fuels worldwide. Since there is no way to force the closing of mines or oil wells in different countries, or to determine which mines or wells in what specific countries should be closed, the effort seems pointless.

And this exactly why we moved west, but not too far west. First of all, “global warming” isn’t even an accurate term. It’s climate change. I’m not against clean fuel, that would be dumb. But this contest, is dumb.

Hmmm....They sent out “educational” packets (read brainwashing), and they’re encouraging the use of poster board and markers to fight global warming. I wonder how much warming the waste of these materials caused. Shouldn’t these people fight global warming by sitting at home in the cold and dark?

Global Warming what can we do?
Edwards would want to sue, sue, sue, sue.

Hillary will pull a present from under the tree
One that will pick the pockets of you and of me.

Barack will open his mouth to speak
but Michelle will be the one to squawk and squeak.

The Bore will step from his private jet
“Carbon credits are what you must get”!

Global warming, global warming oh what will we do?
Won’t someone come to our rescue?

Have no fear little one for it is said
We should remember Mr Barnum who is long dead!

CLIMATE CHANGE runs in cycles. . spring, summer autum and winter!! It is caused by the sun...and not by anything mankind can do. It is enormous ego of any human who says or believes that mere humans on earth can make the earth either warm, or cool accordingly!! It is a simple truth..and the selling of America by Algore will make him millions!! What suckers he thinks we all are!!

What can ANYONE do about “global warming”?

More importantly, is it in our interests to do ANYTHING about what can only be a net benefit for all mankind, and for most of the other species that inhabit this planet?

First, of course, is the degree of certainty that the world is even getting warmer, not yet a proven or demonstrated reality. It would seem, there is about as much chance, over the coming decades, tht the world will grow COLDER rather than warmer.

Secondly, even if long-term trends do bear out the shaky assertion that the earth is getting warmer, how is this a bad thing? Taking a trip from London to Tokyo, with a side hop over to Point Barrow, Alaska, by surface ship, would seem to cut a LOT of time off the ocean voyage as it is now being followed. The seals will be out from under the sea ice much earlier in the spring, making food much more accessible for the polar bears. And bananas being grown in Labrador does not sound so bad.

Thirdly, more carbon dioxide in the air just makes plant growth more luxuriant, which in terms of food production, can also only be viewed as a positive benefit.

Superstitious dread of any kind of change is a much greater concern than how much the temperature may rise or fall over the next century.

And apparently we cannot do much about this feeling of paranoia and impending doom that some people seem to want to create for themselves continuously. No amount of sweet reason can ever calm that sort of confused thinking.
