SHIRLEY, Mass. --A killer accused in the slaying of a newlywed couple in Washington state shortly after he was released from prison in Massachusetts should have been held behind bars for almost a year longer, but the Romney administration failed to file paperwork in time to take away his "good time" credits.
A Department of Correction superintendent, under then-Gov. Mitt Romney, did not act on a disciplinary recommendation to strip 300 days of credit from Daniel Tavares after he was accused of threats to prison staff in 2003, state officials announced Friday in releasing results of a probe into the Tavares case.
Because of the paperwork error, Tavares was allowed to keep nearly a year's worth of "good days" to complete his sentence June 14. Five months later, newlyweds Brian and Beverly Mauck were killed in Graham, Wash., allegedly by Tavares.
"He would have still been incarcerated. We are very dismayed. He was violent," Correction Commissioner Harold Clarke said at a news conference Friday. "This is an individual who should not have been released any earlier than required."
Clarke, whose first day was Nov. 26, called the failure unacceptable. He said the record-keeping and release date computation is "a basic function of any correctional agency."
In total, hearing officers recommended 780 days of "good time" be taken away from Tavares for six different violent incidents spanning 1993 to 2005, but authorities say there is no paperwork to explain why action was not taken by Correction officials on five of those cases spanning 1993 to 2005. The only case with records showed a prison superintendent under Romney failed to meet a 60-day deadline to file the paperwork to take away 300 days in 2003. As a result, top Correction officials who make the final decision to strip

This lame article has already been posted a few times. A governor is now responsible for every act of every state worker? When they even get a DUI, the governor is now guilty? Another stupid and lame attack against Mitt from a Fred Thompson supporter.
So if this was about Giuliani or Dukakis or Bill Clinton, you’d be saying the same thing?
Let me guess here. You can’t figure out the search feature?
Dukakis wasn’t as destructive a Governor as Joe Isuzu Romney.
So this doesn’t bother your conscience ?
That I have to even SAY that here certainly says something about Romney, though.
I know people on his staff, and he seems like a very nice, smart man. But I see no reason to vote for him.
A department of Corrections officer? This is like griping about career state dept personnel.
Apparently, some of Romney's friends can't figure out where the information about how long he was governor can be found, so you shouldn't be that surprised. ;)
You have a far higher opinion of him than I do. Dukakis left MA more Republican than Joe Isuzu Romney did. The fact that his half-wit supporters refuse to realize that just shows how much in denial they are about his reign of destruction.
The Judge.
It's a dem state to the core. I've lived her all my life with a few years out of state here and there, and you really have to know some people--family, business acquaintances--to perceive how thoroughly dem this place is.
I don't have a great opinion of him as governor, but I don't see how ANY Republican could have thrived in this current atmosphere.
A Department of Correction superintendent, under then-Gov. Mitt Romney, did not act on a disciplinary recommendation to strip 300 days of credit from Daniel Tavares...
So, a department of Corrections superintendent fails to do his job properly, and this is Romney's fault?
As I said on another thread, I am a Fred supporter, but honestly, this does not reflect on Romney.
What was left to him wasn’t his fault, but what he left behind was. He was a disciple of Weld’s, and Weld was a Clintonista whose mission was to destroy the state party completely. Romney completed the mission. It’s no wonder Weld endorsed him completely (of course, the Romneybots won’t mention Weld’s endorsement, since that would confirm his liberalism).
Typical Mitt man answer, you just don't want to admit, Romney is, was lost as to his responsibility to the public
Yes, especially when you couple this issue with the Judge Mitt appointed.
I am sure we can come up with some trash on your candidate for some obscure worker in the administration that did something wrong. It is only wrong around here if you don’t like the candidate.
Thank you for being honest. What I hate around here are attacks on candidates that are totally senseless. I support Romney, but will be proud to support anyone we send up against the democrats.
