Low-Key Thompson Stumbles Toward Finish Line
ABC ^ | 1/2/08 | Rick Klein

Two days before the Iowa caucuses — day 15 of his 17-day "hands down" bus tour — former senator Fred Thompson's campaign bus stood motionless in the snowy parking lot of a West Des Moines motel, across from a movie theater and a suburban strip mall.

Thompson's campaign scheduled only one event for New Year's Day, a meet-and-greet at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, about an hour outside Des Moines. Thompson, R-Tenn., shunned the bus, emblazoned with his picture, for the relative comfort of a black Chevrolet Suburban.

(snip)

Thompson has staked his campaign's prospects to Iowa. In seeking to jump-start his campaign last month, he promised to crisscross the Hawkeye State with visits to 50 cities and towns in 17 days aboard his new campaign bus.

Hunter was on WNTK Yesterday, making the rounds on the local radio stations and eating establishments.

Wagering is a man-thing. I don’t wager. I’ll be disappointed if Thompson ever drops out. It will be as everyone expected if Hunter drops out.

A smart individual position to take......

My assessment is that I’d expect Thompson to drop out before Hunter if Thompson has made the assessment that he can’t win the nomination. For the following reasons:

Intelligence
Management acumen
Ability to make hard decisions
Respect for his family, supporters and campaign staff
Respect for the process and interest of the country

Funny, I’ve never met a Hunter supporter that remotely puts Keyes in the same category as Hunter.

As I said, pro-choice or not is not high on my list of priorities, thus Thompson’s record (other than the fiasco of CFR) is conservative to me.

I reckon beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I don’t think global warming alarmism is conservative, nor do I think being a longtime member of the Senate’s Centrist Coalition, or voting for PNTR with China, or trying to ditch the GOP platform is indicative of a conservative. To each their own.

I know you were responding to my comment to you....that doesn’t change the fact you are confusing me with someone that cars about your opinion about my opinion.

I saw Thompson on L&O last night...

WOW --- that is NOT a good thing for whichever network (cable or not) to do.

... think it was USA or TNT...

I was watching the USA L&O marathon and didn't see him at all, so my guess it must have been TNT. Regardless, that is still a major no-no in my book.

I remember the big todo made about keeping all Ronald Reagan movies being ditched from schedules when he ran. Thompson should be held to those same standards.

Becuase Fred has celebrity and money and name ID and many GOP bigs backing him, yet he is continuing to flounder. And Hunter could certainly use an influx of volunteers.

So you have two guys that have both (if Fred is floundering, so is Hunter), candidates who are floundering, you want the one with the most support to get out of the race because he had his "shot"?

You are not being logical my FRiend.

[He said that in a sarcastic tone after the Press person asked if he had to finish 3rd. I know. Because I was in the room when it happened.

It was a putdown to the press.]

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I didn’t know that.

Thanks for correcting the record.

Actually, I think he’s discovered the secret the “A-Type” personalities haven’t discovered, and the thing that leads to them aging like CRAZY when they get into the White House — STRESS KILLS. There is no need to run around willy-nilly, and raise one’s blood pressure every hour of every day. Staying CALM is actually a very good thing when one will be faced with tough decisions. It allows one to maintain clarity and make those decisions without stress and emotions interferring. THAT is what makes a good leader, IMO. Not someone who freaks out all the time.

Yep, $$$ per vote is a big factor here, and Romney IMO, has taken a HUGE risk pumping so many dollars into Iowa. If he doesn’t come out far and away the clear winner it doesn’t look good for him in the long run. Again, just speaking as a political “newbie” here, but I did learn a few things from my time in 3rd party races. ;)

You have a very idealistic and unplausible view.

I disagree. Tearing down Fred, only means good things for Mitt, Huckabee...or RUDY.

Not really. No more idealistic than thinking a guy went from the mid 20s to the low teens over the last few months in national polls has a chance.
