Liberal group sounds alarm over Huck's big win
The Swamp ^ | January 4, 2008 | James Oliphant

Posted on 01/04/2008 11:55:07 AM PST by Tlaloc

The left-leaning advocacy group People For the American Way today released a statement this afternoon on the Arkansas Republican's win in the caucus. Long story short: Don't be fooled by a few folksy one-liners, PFAW says:

If there were any doubts that Religious Right voters are still a powerful force in the Republican Party, Mike Huckabee’s huge win in Iowa put them to rest.

Huckabee’s rise was built on fervent grassroots organizing by Religious Right activists who embraced him as their dream candidate, even as the movement’s national leaders kept their distance while making calculations on electability.

Huckabee has pledged to support every item on the ultraconservative wish list – a far-right Supreme Court, a constitutional ban on abortion, a veto of legislation to protect gay and lesbian Americans from discrimination, support for a bill to keep federal courts from intervening when local officials abuse the power of their office to promote their religious beliefs – and more.

Huckabee’s friendly folksy demeanor can distract attention from the disturbing fact that he and his backers essentially urged conservative evangelicals to vote for him based on his being the “right” kind of Christian. That should make Americans very nervous.

The statement came from Peter Montgomery, the group's VP of communications. That means that Huckabee is officially on the radar here.

They oughta pipe down. A Huck nomination just about guarantees a Dem victory.

If Huckabee becomes the nominee, I’ll be staying home.
If someone is going to take the country down the wrong road with liberal/socialist policies, it may as well be a Democrat...that way they can get the rightful blame.

OK, I just don't get it.

We've been told for a few months now by MANY FReepers that Huck is a "liberal conservative Evangelical."

Why, if his liberalness so outweighed his conservative aspect; if his NEA endorsement trumped other stuff; then why wouldn't the PFAW NOT be jumpin' up & down with a congratulatory press release?

Can these Huck "labelers" please explain this to the rest of us?

A common claim for the last couple decades has been, “I’m a fiscal conservative but a social liberal.”

Well, Huck’s a social conservative and a fiscal liberal. Nothing particularly self-contradictory in that position. Actually less than the other, IMHO, as socially liberal policies inevitably create a demand for the expansion of government.

All this shows is that for PFAW social conservatism is more important than fiscal liberalism.

Gee, after reading this I begin to think maybe the Huck isn’t so bad after all.

Then again maybe PFAW is doing their reverse psychology on me.

A Huck nomination just about guarantees a Dem victory.

And put an end to so called Christians trying to mandate morality.

Given a choice of Huckabee vs Obama, I'd probably go for Obama.

“It turns out they are just opposed to Christians in general.”

No. They want Republicans to think they are against him. He would be their dream candidate. The easiest to defeat and the most like them if he wins.

Yes, you may be shocked to learn the MSM and liberal interest groups don't care about the facts on Huck.

Ever since Jerry Falwell supported Ronald Reagan the left has been claiming the Republican Party is in the hip pocket of evangelical Christians. It was inevitable they would spin Huck's victory that way.

Does it really surprise you the left loathes Huck the Evangelical as much as you loath Mitt the Mormon?

“If Huckabee becomes the nominee, I’ll be staying home”

I don’t like Huck either but I will have to vote for him if he is the nominee. I said the same thing about McCain yesterday. I really don’t like any of the pubbies but Hunter and Thompson, but there is no way I’m staying home and let ANY of the Dem’s win. I’ll take Huck, McCain, Rudy or Romney over any of the Dems.
