Mark Steyn: It's the secular Left vs. the Christian Left
ocregister ^ | January 5, 2008 | Mark Steyn

-- snip --

So, Iowa chose to reward, on the Democrat side, a proponent of the conventional secular left, and, on the Republican side, a proponent of a new Christian left. If that's the choice, this is going to be a long election year.

...I can state without any doubt Rush is a Fred Thompson supporter.

Similar listening experience. And I share your observation.

But Fred has got to prove he belongs in the race first.

He's taken an unusual direction in this day and age: face-to-face, I am who I am, retail politics. He does not court the media. He is taking serious, substantive positions on the issues. Indeed, he is clearly the most serious candidate in the race.

Personally, I like what he's doing. But I'm not sure it's going to work...

Mark Steyn is a very, very smart man. As usual, his observations are outstanding. The so-called “Christian Right” has never really been “Conservative” in the true sense of the word. Most of the people who fell under this heading were merely “moralists” who had little or no respect for the fiscal restraint, muscular foreign policy and semi-libertarian views of the true Conservative movement.

I too find myself agreeing with Mike Huckabee that without a strong moral culture, America is not going to prevail against Islamofascists abroad.

I agree with that statement as well. But does Huckabee really believe it?

Government nanny's undermine families and I don't see Huckabee pursuing the WOT with any vigor. I don't trust Huck any farther than I could throw one of his sons.

He makes a plausible argument that the defense of our interests stops at our coastal waters and borders.

And that's the problem. Our national interests do not stop at the coast or the borders.

Not anymore than your interests stop at the margins of your yard.

Thanks for outlining some of the most dangerously naive talking points of the Paulestinians. It helps.

This article shows why ALL REAL conservatives need to immediately get behind Fred Thompson before it is too late!

Good article . http://www.newswithviews.com/Duke/selwyn79.htm

Has that one been posted on FreeRepublic. If not someone should.

The pro-Amnesty for illegals Huckabee must be stopped.

If you read that article you will see how dangerous Huckabee is . How many illegals does he plan to bring in 100 million , 200 million? And then he will give them all benefits paid by us.

on the Republican side, a proponent of a new Christian left

I have been saying this here for months. Study Huckabee's past rhetoric on illegal immigrants. Compare with statements from proponents of "Liberation theology" from Latin America, circa 1986 in Nicaragua and elsewhere. It is nearly indistinguishable. The man has distorted Christianity exactly as has James Earl Carter. He is a charlatan and must not only be defeated, but repudiated.

Loved your post.

I will use it when we cover WWII later this spring for my homeschooled daughter’s history class.

I would have to agree with you on that. Rush should have come out a long time ago, after 2006, when he said he would no longer carry the water for RINOs. He should have mentioned , without personal attacks, that Rudy, Mitt, Huck, etc. were not conservatives and have espoused liberal policies.

The mistake here was thinking he could straddle the fence. Rush had success by being the “Doctor of Conservatism”. If he disses Huck, he must also include the other RINOs in the equation. I know he probably, on a personal basis, likes these people, but they are not conservatives. The other guys, with the exception of the dispicable Huck, did not personally attack him, so I can understand why, if he was endorsing no one, he did not speak out.

Rush has boxed himself into a corner. He has one way out only. That would be to come out and endorse a conservative candidate. Even if the candidate loses, Rush can save face.

Steyn was right in this article, funny too.

Frankly, I blame President Bush for this muddle. By keeping a dead-end street like Dick Cheney in the VP slot, he effectively left the GOP without a strong heir apparent. Plus, his idiotic immigration policy effectively caused the defeat in 2006 which lost the GOP control of the Congress and helped defeat some of our strongest would-be presidential candidates.

Bush's fault! (no /sarc this time...)

I agree with your comments. As I listened to his show yesterday, he came across as “elitist”. He seemed exasperated to have to explain populism and then explain why he didn’t have to explain why he would not publically support a candidate. RL knows that folks look to him for leadership and he revels in it. Yet, I had the thought that if he were to come out for a candidate and then that candidate lost, his position as the number one conservative commentator would be damaged or vanish.

Interestingly, your list describes the stereotypical “Reagan Democrat.”

Exactly. I’ve noticed that for some time now.

Huckabee is running as a Reagan Democrat, only he’s a Republican.

That’s why he’s doing well.

An example - did we invade Libya ? No. Then how did we make it uninviting for Libya to continue its weapons programs ? We took out Afghanistan as retaliation for 9/11 - and along with the Taliban, Quaddafi capitulated voluntarily.

I have to correct this. Quaddafi turned over his program shortly after Saddam was dug out of the little hole in the ground where he was hiding from us. I think it was Berlesconi who said that Quaddafi had specifically mentioned Saddam's capture in his decision to send us his nuclear program.

This incident undermines, rather than supports, Ron Paul's position.

"The Kingdom of Christ on earth does not depend on having a Christian as President. Else Jimmy Carter would have ushered in the New Age."

I was on a site that reviewed the Jimmah Carter documentary "The Man From Plains". One of the posters commented how Jimmy Carter was the most like Jesus in how he behaves. I wish I'd responded to the person, but why should I argue with a fool?

In the 1790s the US fought an undeclared Naval War aganist France and waged war on the Barbary Pirates.

Defending US National Interests has never stopped “at our borders”. It is an example of his fundamental ignorance, as well as his total unfitness for the office of Commander in Chief, that Dr Ron Paul makes such an intellectually absurd, ignorant argument.
