That yellow strip showing the first-down line was put into your TV by Stan Honey. The viewing enhancement was developed by Honey, 52, in the Palo Alto Craftsman where he lives with his wife, Sally, two-time U.S. yachtswoman of the year, and two Emmy Awards on the mantel.

Truly amazing and useful technology. Back in the day, we didn't need no stinkin' yellow lines, we took a ruler and scaled off the hash marks. You knew if a play made a first down or not by looking at the whether the referee spotted the ball with his left or right foot.

Remember when the Cowboys painted direction arrrows on the field by the hash marks so you knew which way to the end zone? (low tech, but still used).

No, I do not recall.

Football was the reason I bought my first new TV. Cost a week’s pay.
