Former Secretary of State Colin Powell praised Barack Obama on the eve of the New Hampshire primary, crediting the Illinois Senator for breaking barriers while running as "an American man" who can represent the entire nation. In an interview with PBS host Tavis Smiley, Powell said he was "taking joy" in Obama's rise and he said citizens across the country can "enjoy this moment where a person like Barack Obama can knock down all of these old barriers that people thought existed with respect to the opportunities that are available to African Americans."
Powell, the first black person to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, National Security Advisor, and Secretary of State, also firmly rebutted the idea that reporters or voters should assess whether a candidate is white or black "enough."
This argument about him not being black enough, that's just absolute nonsense. He is putting himself forward not as a black man but as an American man who wants to be president of the United States of America. We should see Barack as a candidate for president who happens to be black, and not a black candidate for president.
It also blew a hole in my opinion of Powell.
I don’t think it was an endorsement. It was an acknowledgement of Obama’s accomplishments.
Would he acknowledge Hillary’s accomplishments? Maybe. Maybe not.
Funny. You guys must have triggered something, because when I think of Colin Powell, I think BLOWHOLE.
Colin Powell always seems to be there for us when we most need him.
Yeah, all those accomplishments, like... for example... well, you know. All those accomplishments.
Powell is a complete scumbag. He knew all along that his buddy Armitage was the person who told Novak about Plame but he said nothing. That makes Powell as much a cowardly scumbag as Armitage, and that’s saying something.
He beat Hillary in the Iowa primary. And he’s still alive four days later. THAT is an accomplishment. Just wait until Wednesday.
I really don’t see what these RAT voters see in him, but when you have the choices they have, Opie Taylor might be the one. (Hubby thinks Obama looks like Opie.) A friend of ours GUSHES, and I do mean GUSHES over Obama. It’s scary.
I felt very comfortable when I figured the rats were destined to nominate the repugnant, thoroughly unelectable Hillary. Her nomination would lead not only to a colossal electoral landslide for the Republican candidate (any Republican candidate) but would even improve the GOPs chance to take back the House with the down ticket ripple effect.
But Obama? The Obama phenomenon is too new to get a handle on, especially since right now its only the rats who are paying him much attention. I do sense the possibility, though, that with ten months of vigorous face time on TV the silly Obama fad might fade away like the hoola hoop, Trivial Pursuit, and Tickle My Elmo. I just hope it happens before election day 2008
Powell was never a Republican. Now, he reveals that race is more important to him than party.
Remember that Hillary has Carville and a host of other dirt machine veterans working for her; I predict a scorched earth attack on Obama anytime now. If Hillary cant win, then the guy who upset her lifelong dream sure wont be allowed to win. Oh, no - - he will pay. Big time.
I would ask you to look at Colin Powell through the lens of the democratic primary and not as a conservative or republican. For those middle-of-the-road independents, democrats and many blacks who will be voting in the dems’ primary, Powell’s praise of Obama reduces Hillary’s chances.
oh she’ll still beat obama in the end but she’s going to look even uglier and nastier
So?
For the purposes of this post, his party affiliation is irrelevant. We're talking about the DEMOCRATIC primary.
She's losing in NH, Nevada and S.C. The mainstream press is starting to bail. Her staff is in deep turmoil and her money is drying up.
Nah, I don't think she's going beat Obama.
Scumbag? Please don’t overreach. Powell served this country proudly. As for his politics I have no respect. I mostly have contempt for letting his “exit strategy” quote be used like it is.
That is so true.
I agree, and that's the problem.
