Three Americans among those arrested in Rio Bravo shootout
Houston Chronicle/AP ^ | Jan. 8, 2008

McALLEN, Texas — Three Americans were among 10 suspects arrested in a shootout with Mexican federal troops Monday that left three gunmen dead in the Mexican border city of Rio Bravo.

A gunfight broke out in front of the Rio Bravo police station between Mexican soldiers, federal police and suspected drug cartel members, officials said.

The Americans arrested Monday were Esteban Valdez de los Santos of Texas and Ricardo Zamora Lopez and Jose Raul Gonzalez Sanchez, both of Detroit, The McAllen Monitor reported. It wasn't immediately known where in Texas Valdez was from.

The Monitor reported that at least two soldiers and one federal police officer were injured in the fighting. One soldier was hospitalized in Reynosa.

Authorities seized 40 weapons, including AK-47s and AR-15s, as well as three vehicles.

Witnesses described a frightening scene with gunmen breaking down doors and positioning themselves inside homes for the gun battle.

It was the second outbreak of gun violence in Rio Bravo, about 15 miles south of McAllen, in recent months. On Nov. 30, former Rio Bravo Mayor Juan Antonio Guajardo Anzaldu and five others were killed in a shooting outside a downtown restaurant.

After that incident, Mexican President Felipe Calderon sent thousands of soldiers and federal police to calm the city. Tamaulipas state, which is home to Rio Bravo, is the base for the Gulf cartel and has been plagued by drug violence.

You can’t go wrong with either movie, really. Great stuff.

Nothing; that’s the cast of El Dorado.

Rio Bravo had Little Rickey playing Rick.

We’re going to have to be defending ourselves from the scum that is slithering across the border out of Mexico.

... and out of Detroit.

Wrong movie but same story line. Robert Mitchum played the alcoholic sheriff in one and Dean Martin played the same part in the other.

Prefer the Mitchum movie but never keep the two titles straight.

Here is the opening sentence of this story from the Houston Chronicle:

================

Free six-pack of your favorite beverage to anyone who can find a Houston Chronicle article that says, "Three Mexicans were among those arrested...".

Heck, pick your number. I just want ONE article that tells me about an arrested Mexican who committed a crime against Americans.

And, no, I haven't searched. I feel pretty confident ;-)

At least our new super highway will make their commutes less stressful from one to the other.

It’s the same damned movie. It was just remade so Ricky Nelson could play the James Caan part.

El Dorado and Rio Bravo were essentiallythe same movie sans Walter Brennand and Ricky Nelson.

Only the names were changed to protect the innocent.
