Golden Globes Awards Show Canceled, Replaced With News Conference

LOS ANGELES — The Golden Globes, the ceremony known for getting Hollywood's awards season off to a rollicking start, will be reduced to a news conference Sunday by the writers strike and will likely draw picket lines and lack star power.

Despite the revamped ceremony announced Monday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Screen Actors Guild said it was encouraging its members to skip the show in support of the two-month walkout by the Writers Guild of America.

"The WGA informed us they will picket the event on Sunday," the actors guild said in a statement.

Patric M. Verrone, president of the Writers Guild of America West, said union leaders were uncertain if they still would picket outside the Golden Globes since they were unclear about what form the awards announcement would take.

"I would say an awards show in news conference clothing would still be picketed, but I just don't know if it's been definitively decided," Verrone said.

As he arrived at Monday's Critics' Choice Awards, George Clooney said he belongs to six unions and would not cross any picket lines.

Later, as he made a presentation, Clooney said, "Our hope

Not that I care a whit, but I thought the writers came to an agreement in the last day or so, that the strike had ended.

I have not heard this.

Wouldn’t it be a hoot if the news conference got the same ratings as the show itself??

I say we all watch.

Another interesting piece of related news is that one of Hollywood's top 3 payroll service companies, Axium, is filing for bankruptcy. They completely shut down yesterday after no resolutions were found to their 'liquidity crisis'. No one is getting paid for the last 2 weeks of work and clients like union members, production workers and as well as guilds (DGA), studios etc. with bond insurance and payroll deposits are having difficulties getting their deposits, paychecks, residual money and pension payments.

This is very much affecting the smaller independent productions that have to make a large deposit with Axium to cover expenses to which the production 'draws upon'. That money is now frozen and these productions have had to switch to another payroll company and make new deposits with them.

Some are saying the WGA strike was the tipping point as many productions shut down and Axium's cash flow went into the negative. When Axium went to their secured prime lending source for a credit extension...Golden Tree Asset....they were turned down. Because of not being able to pay back taxes etc....it is the rumor that the IRS is now involved.

Hehe. The "Indian" was actually a guy of Italian descent from Louisiana.

Not sure what I'd heard, but the strike continues.

I'm usually so good about ignoring those voices in my head, but once all the howler monkeys get in sync.... well... anything can happen.

That was the 1st worth warching! 31 minutes, no self-aggrandizing spoilt “actors”, “actreeses”, “firectors” etc. overdressed and full of champagne and vicadin accepting awards and giving speeches. I’m hopeful the Oscars run quicker. ;-)

You know, if the writers were actually important, they’d have hired replacement writers already. The NFL did it a few years back.
