Scrapped Golden Globe ceremony hits Hollywood hard --- REUTERS

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood scrambled on Tuesday to assess the fallout from the decision to scrap the glittering Golden Globe movie and TV awards ceremony and hold only a news conference that few stars are likely to attend.

Caterers, limousine drivers, stylists, hotels and dozens of magazines and TV shows found themselves out of work when this Sunday's star-studded Golden Globes gala dinner and red carpet walk-up fell victim to the nine-week-old screenwriters strike.

"There are a lot of people being hurt by this," said Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. He estimated the Golden Globes annually bring in $70-$80 million to the Los Angeles economy.

"A lot of the parties are being canceled and they can run up to $200,000 each. There is a big ripple impact from this in terms of hotel bookings, security guards, parking attendants, beauticians etc.," Kyser said.

Then there are the goody bags.

What will happen to all that stuff? The attendees won’t be there and won’t get the goody bags. Can it be returned?

What a job, taking 250 bracelets back to Tiffanys to get a refund on a special order.

A friend of ours does special effects and he has been off work a lot during the past several weeks. This week he didn’t work a all. He’s currently working on a very big name movie that started filming a few months ago. I would think their script would be finished and the strike wouldn’t affect the project, but for whatever reasons, his work has slowed way down.

Question is will the Hollywood crowd really want to give up their Starbucks while they all collect unemployment?

I have never watched a GG award show. Then again, I always avoid the awards shows - they are a waste of bandwidth.

But, but, how are we supposed to know who is the latest Michael Moore or Albert Gore if they don’t have the Golden Globes?

Or suppose we never hear about the latest version of “Brokeback Mountain”!

Where do we go to get our instructions?

You wrote: No bad skanky actresses in bad dresses.
I might also add “each one vying to be skinnier and fit into the perfect size zero bad dress”. This Hollywood personality phenomenon amazes me, but I, like a lot of people, still sit through numerous “news” stories about their latest series of “weddings of the century” (when their third marriage was already tagged as the “wedding of the century”) like someone watching a train wreck as it’s happening. Why don’t we just turn them off and quit feeding the monster?

Not in the least. I’m lovin it. It’s about time unHolywood takes it on the chin. Such as it is. Not so much. But it’s nice to see them squirming in their pantlons.

Indeed. When I was young, I was often subjected to the Oscars because I had relatives who wanted to see what film won Best Picture and who won Best Actor/Actress. You had to sit through endless amounts of crap to get to the only categories for which anyone gave a damn. Even then, you had to listen to rambling speeches that hit your gag reflex. The Academy Awards can best be done by posting a categorised list on the Internet and skip all the mutual boot-licking and narcissism. Not that I have an opinion, mind you.
