There were other so-called candidates who were not on the "ballot". There was no official ballot. People wrote their choices on a piece of paper. If anyone wanted to vote for Keyes, all they had to do is write down his name.

I helped count the ballots in our precinct and Keyes had no votes.

Wouldn’t have mattered if he had any votes. The party made no provision for reporting them the way other candidates votes were counted. And the phony ballot fooled lots of good folks.

My daughter was completely disenfranchised in her first presidential vote, from beginning to end. Same goes for other members of my family, and a number of very good friends. You can laugh that off if you want, but I won’t.
