MOBILE, Ala.) Jan. 10 -- The suspect accused of causing the deaths of his four children, Lam Luong, had his first court appearance before a judge on Thursday. The judge was tough, the court appearance routine. It's what happened after that court hearing that is now causing confusion.
Luong met with his court-appointed attorney, Joe Kulakowski, minutes after the hearing on Thursday. The lawyer recorded his conversation with Luong and, it was during that conversation the accused man told his lawyer he did NOT throw his children off the bridge.
The accused man explained he had been questioned repeatedly by police officers after he came to them to file a missing persons report. Luong claims during that encounter he was badgered and broken, began saying anything, and wound up saying something unspeakable.
What is said in court matters. The defendant is denied bond after Judge Charlie McKnight chastised him. But now, defense attorney Kulakowski is shifting the focus to what was said right after court.
On the recording, Luong is heard saying: The babies still alive. Thats the truth.
The recording, obtained by NBC15 News, has a voice identified as Luongs telling the attorney he didn't throw his babies off the Dauphin Island Bridge. He also said an extensive search of the waters near the bridge would be in vain.
I don't know what they can find. I hope they don't find nothing, Luong says.
The lawyer responds, Well, they're not gonna find nothing in the water.
Thats when the accused man says, No, cause they're not there.
NBC15 News contacted Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson, Jr. to get his response to Luongs statement. Tyson says what is on the tape doesnt change the direction of their investigation. They intend to move forward with Capital Murder charges against Lum Luong, whos next court appearance is scheduled for March 5.
We were talking about this last night.
But he knows,,don’t cut him any slack..
Yep...i’m holding a little hope that they are ok...just a little.
I’m cutting him no slack whatsoever.
If your client uses double negatives you must too? WTF?!
yeah...i had to read it a few times.
Then where are they a**hole? I think he’s a liar. I think he tossed them off the bridge.
Haven't heard how good the fellow's grasp of English is, but I wonder if there was a language barrier exacerbated by the apparently tough questioning.
I sure hope so. It would be incredible if this story had a happy ending.
So where are the kids?
One article said the family initially thought he traded the children. I hope they find the kids.
Some rumors of a girlfriend having them....just rumors.
Waterboard him..... seriously
Waterboard him..... seriously
yep...hanging from the bridge.
She needs to come forward ASAP.
Handcuff him and leave him alone in the room with “momma” He will talk.
Then reveal where they are.
He lawyered up, and then changed his story. If he muddies the water enough, he can dodge the death penalty.
waterboard him
