It's not all evangelicals, but there definitely is a portion of the group that believes this. I personally know several. And on the other hand, all of the wacky things I've heard about Mormons has never been borne out by the Mormons that I know. So guess which group I distrust...

That's because nobody seems to ask specific questions, such as:

True or false: Faithful Mormons can become gods of their own planets, calling their wives up and having spirit babies to populate said planets.

True or false: Brigham Young in D&C said -

"Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 3, p. 266). Also, "The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 11, page 269).
