Iraqi Lawmakers Pass Key Benchmark De-Baathification Law
Fox New ^ | 01-12-2008 | Associated Press

Posted on 01/12/2008 6:10:52 AM PST by MNJohnnie

Iraq's parliament adopted legislation Saturday on the reinstatement of thousands of former Baath party supporters to government jobs, a key benchmark sought by the United States as a step toward national reconciliation.

The bill was approved by a unanimous show of hands on each of the law's 30 clauses. Titled the Accountability and Justice law, it seeks to relax restrictions on the rights of members of Saddam Hussein's now-dissolved Baath party to fill government posts.

It is also designed to reinstate thousands of Baathists in government jobs from which they had been dismissed because of their ties to the party.

The dismissal of thousands of Baath Party supporters from these jobs after Saddam was toppled in 2003 deepened sectarian tensions between Iraq's majority Shiites and the once-dominant Sunni Arabs, who saw the de-Baathification process as targeting their community.

HAAAAAA! I am laughing so hard I think I hurt myself. Another massive defeat for the Democrat Congressional Leadership. Just days after launching the Democrat Leadership launches their attack about "lack of political progress in Iraq" the Iraqis pass this! Talk about perfect timing.

Good. It would unfeasible and counterproductive to exclude all the low and medium rank technocrats and skilled professionals just because they were coerced to join the Baath Party.
A great step in the direction of reconciliation.

If they would only pass an oil law the Dems would have to just shut the hell up. You can bet they will dismiss this with something along the lines of too little too late or some such nonsense.

The funny thing is the way the Iraqis have the system working now is just as good as the law. The Oil revenue sharing is all ready going on between regional Govts. There just no over reaching National law. Why the Iraqis are so so slow to just adopt this current system nationally I do not understand.

The Oil law will come eventually. Democrats are might as well wave the white flag, they are playing a lossing hand and will be losing cards from that hand every month from now to Nov 2008

To believe this crap ‘requires a willing suspension of disbelief’. The surge has failed, the war is lost, and we must withdraw, er, surrender immediately! Once again this is Bush’s fault, he should be impeached now! Sorry, I have not had my morning coffee yet, and am channeling my inner Dingy Harry, Hiladabeast, Silky Pony, and UFO loving Dennis.

I think in the United States, we refer to this as federalism............mode of political organization that unites separate states or other polities within an overarching political system in such a way as to allow each to maintain its own fundamental political integrity. Federal systems do this by requiring that basic policies be made and implemented through negotiation in some form, so that all the members can share in making and…

The Iraqis are operating under the Saddam era law until they can get some kind of new law. The only real problem for them is trying to resolve the Kurds determination to go their own way.

I don't mean it in a military sense, I mean it in an effective political sense. The Sunnis were equivalent to the Tutsi (Rwanda) and the Shiites were equivalent to the Hutus (Rwanda) and we put the Shiites in charge and naturally their first priority was to take revenge against the Sunnis. So the Sunni Insurgency formed, at least in part, in reaction to the Shiites. So, as one would have predicted, history simply repeated itself.

I know, the Dinocons have to find SOMETHING to bitch about. Because God knows their fragile little egos cannot simply admit they have been wrong, and that cowboy Bush right, all along about Iraq.

Get Hillary and Obama on the record fast... Don’t let the slimy rats get away with their Defeatism... If they had their way Iraq would be a bastion of terror training camps with blood flowing in the Streets of the U.S. But because George W. Bush acted and implemented a surge that every Democrat less Joe Liberman was against and to which every Democrats attempted to sabotage and vote for our troops defeat to forward their own political gain at the behest of those enslaved by Move on dot org and George Soros because we would have pulled the troops out in 05 when they started all that crap and success would not have been possible...

Shout it from every roof top and write it in every op-ed... George W. Bush was right.....

Exactly... but then you get a Katrina and you find out just how ineffective the Democratic State Run government is and then you act at the Federal level so that the state doesn’t allow thousands of its people to die and you still get blasted.... Because the left leaning media will only spin negatives about anything run by a Republican.
