Too much government now
Contra Costa Times ^ | 1/12/08 | Don Huggins

Each year our elected representatives feel they must sponsor new legislation to show constituents they are hard at work and productive. The inevitable result, however, is that over the years we have more and more laws to deal with, increasing government incursion in our daily lives, increasing size of government, higher taxes and/or increasing public debt, and increasing waste of tax monies. This problem exists at all levels of government. I was reminded of this problem as I read through The Queen of the Road's list of new road rules in the Jan. 3 Times. Some new rules are good, but how about this one: Under AB 868, California will begin studying the effects of fuel temperature on consumers. Gasoline becomes less dense at higher temperatures, which means consumers receive less fuel weight (per gallon) in hot weather than cool, assuming they're paying the same amount per gallon.

I have several comments. First, it doesn't take a government program to "study" the effect of temperature on density of any given fuel. Second, gasoline prices vary a lot, depending on supply and demand. Third, maybe the solution is to raise the price during the winter because gasoline is denser and therefore a bargain.

I can't believe that anyone would seriously believe that gasoline prices should be indexed to the gasoline's temperature. Talk about price controls! And how about all the other products we buy on a per volume basis, since their density also changes with temperature? Is the answer to force the sale of everything by weight?

SB 7 makes it illegal to smoke in a vehicle with a child in the car. I'm not supportive of smoking, and I can understand the intent of protecting innocent children. But if this law is good, why not make it illegal to smoke in a car with a non-smoking adult in the car? Or illegal to smoke in a home where children live? Or ban smoking altogether? Where do we draw the line in controlling what we can eat and drink, and other behaviors, through legislation? Better for the government to focus on educating the public on what's good and bad.

Show me a candidate who will rid us of unnecessary legislation and government waste, and he or she will get my vote.

First thought about the new ID for those under 50 is that the gummint school alienation program has been successful only in the recent decades and those over 50 won’t be taking well to neofascism.

The author needs to look at the building code changes adopted for implementation in 2008. There are so many that builders must now take classes to understand the new requirmenets. California adopted most of the international standards. (Thank you unions.) We can no longer build a simple deck in my area without and engineer’s stamp of approval. It is absurd. People will just increasingly continue to remodel and build outbuildings without a permit. http://www.ci.gilroy.ca.us/bles/pdf/CALIFORNIA_BUILDING_CODES_QA_07_v1.pdf

Then there are all the new requirements in fire areas. The costs of a new home will be astronomical.
