Public 'threatened' by private-firearms ownership

Since "unrestricted' private ownership of guns clearly threatens the public safety, the 2nd Amendment can be interpreted to allow a variety of gun restrictions, according to the Bush administration.

The argument was delivered by U.S. Solicitor General Paul D. Clement in a brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court in the ongoing arguments over the legality of a District of Columbia ban on handguns in homes, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times.

Clement suggested that gun rights are limited and subject to "reasonable regulation" and said all federal limits on guns should be upheld.

"Given the unquestionable threat to public safety that unrestricted private firearm possession would entail, various categories of firearm-related regulation are permitted by the 2nd Amendment," he wrote in the brief, the Times reported.

He noted especially the federal ban on machine guns and those many other "particularly dangerous types of firearms," and endorsed restrictions on gun ownership by felons, those subject to restraining orders, drug users and "mental defectives."

His arguments came in the closely watched Washington, D.C., ban that would prevent residents from keeping handguns in their homes for self-defense.

Paul Helmke, of the pro-gun control Brady Campaign to Prevent Handgun Violence, told the Times he salutes the administration for its position.

I could hope that this would be the last of Bush’s “compassionate” going-away presents, but somehow I doubt it.

What a pant-load of BS!

The First Amendment could be used to threaten "public safety" and the Fourth Amendment could also be used to threaten "public safety", too.

What part of "shall not be infringed" do these folks not get? Once again, the Bush administration is showing it's RINO horn.....

The Republican was elected, just not a conservative.

You JUST figured out that we have been screwed since 2000?

Hopefully you wont go with the "Don't vote Independent Conservative in the General Election, because your vote for the Republican will be wasted and you will give it to the Democrats!" side of the argument and scare tactics this time.

I'm voting my beliefs, and if that means I have to write-in somebody with no chance in hell of winning, so be it, I will know I did right by my beliefs.

When King Leonidas was asked by a Persian emissary for his weapons,
Leonidas said: "Come and take them."

Yes, I concur

Whenever that argument is used, it really means that the GOP candidate stinks.

A truly wasted conservative vote is one on a RINO

And my fellow FR’ers got on my case about how the next Administration would side with DC before the Supreme Court, why wait for the next administration. I can’t think of a thing this Administration has done in its second term that I agree with.
We are now told no matter what we have to support the Rhino who comes out of the primaries, forget it.

OKAY FOLKS. This is PRECISELY the circumstance that the Second Amendment was written for -- when the federal government gets it into its head to take our freedoms away. The first thing they do is take away our guns. Same is true of any government which is going into tyranny. Read history -- first they take away the people's guns.

The Founders were wise, and their gift to us is the Second Amendment -- the one that protects all the others, and the Constitution itself.

Since “unrestricted’ usage of voice and print clearly threatens the public safety, the 1st Amendment can be interpreted to allow a variety of restrictions, according to the administration.

Equally as valid an argument. Fine. - Lets round up a few thousand members of the MSM along with assorted leftist kooks, and a dozen or so professors, and execute them in public.

“Damn I’m disappointed.”

No kidding.

Doesn’t that fool realize that when he leaves office he will be depised by the entire country? The libs hate him without reservation. The conservatives have been so screwed by the guy that they want him retired. Independents have no use for him. He will be on a par with Jimmy Carter when he leaves office. I just hope he’s not as bad a former president as Jimmah turned out to be. He wants a legacy? Well, he’ll have one, but not the one he wanted or would have liked.

“I can’t think of a thing this Administration has done in its second term that I agree with.”

I can only think of two: Roberts and Alito. Other that those two appointments, he has sucked in his second term.
