Support for McCain surges in N.C.

John McCain is on the rise in North Carolina. So say the results of Public Policy Polling's latest tracking poll on the Republican presidential race. The latest numbers show that former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and McCain, the Arizona senator, are neck-and-neck in a survey Wednesday of 978 likely Republican primary voters.

That's a big leap for McCain, who was the choice of just 8 percent of those in the group's December poll.

THE LATEST NUMBERS:

Huckabee - 27 percent

McCain - 26 percent

Mitt Romney - 15 percent

Fred Thompson - 11 percent

Rudy Giuliani - 9 percent

Ron Paul - 4 percent

The survey has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percent.

Forgot to add THIS in the box! NY Slimes misses by a mile again!

How rumors start

The New York Post’s Page Six gossip column failed to check its facts when it wrote last week about U.S. Senate candidate Jim Neal, who used to live in New York.

The column said that former North Carolina Sen. Jesse Helms “will be spinning in his grave” if Neal, who is gay, wins the Democratic nomination and then defeats Republican U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole this fall.

Helms is alive.

Mitt Romney - 15 percent Fred Thompson - 11 percent

Ugh.

My first and second choices ain't doin' so well. And If SC doesn't go for Fred, I fear he's done for.

OK - now they’ve hit my state.

Once again - nobody I talk to has McCain as first choice. Mostly Fred but then a sprinkling of the others. McCain is the 2nd or 3rd choice.

I just saw on TV this morning that McCain has sent out negative flyers in N.C. accusing Romney of not supporting Bush’s tax cuts soon enough. Actually it was McCain, himself, who repeatedly did not support the tax cuts.

Admittedly my Raleigh, NC circle isn’t very large, but most I’ve talked to don’t just NOT support McCain, they outright dislike him.

Most of this data must have been taken in Mecklenburg or Orange County.

I feel like the GOP is driving at full throttle toward a cliff and we’re depending on the NY Times and CNN to tell us which way to steer.

McCain must be stopped and Romney needs every vote he can get in Michigan to do that tomorrow.

Then South Carolina GOP voters can give Fred a chance to be the candidate of the south by voting for him on Saturday.

Otherwise Huck is well positioned to win it all down south.

McCain is picking up steam in the big states.

I dare say McCain will probably win California. Rudy can’t spend any resources to stop him.

The only hope we have to stop him in New York and New Jersey would be to vote Giuliani if we live there.

Its stop McCain every state every where by tactical voting for the candidate in the strongest position to defeat McCain.

If Fred can break through in SC, then maybe he has a shot in Florida, otherwise it may be Romney or Rudy to stop McCain.

If Huckabee is riding shotgun for McCain, which Rush said on the radio last week, its pretty bleak if Fred can’t win.

My theory is that Thompson, who supported McCain-Feingold, is also a McCain outrider.

If that’s the case, then Mitt Romney ends up being the alternative to McCain.

I hope Romney stays in until this mess can be sorted out and we can figure out who’s real and who’s not.

I’m uncommitted at this point, but urging everyone to mobililize tactical voting to prevent McCain from winning states and getting annointed as the “front-runner” by the MSM.

Interesting; since I haven’t seen or heard of any real polling here. I would bet the poll was a quiet tel call in Charlotte and Raleigh.....The newspapers and tv stations have not push polled yet.

The polls were wrong in NH. I hope they are here also. Hard to believe that many Republicans are this stupid and vote for McCain.

Today's The Washington Times in an editorial listed McCain's record on illegal aliens as
1. Supporting mass amnesty.
2. Supporting in-state tuition for illegal aliens.
3. Voted to kill border fence.
4. Voted against permanently barring gang members and terrorists from the United States.
5. Voted in favor of Social Security benefits to illegal aliens who commit identity theft.

No. 4 alone brings to mind The Manchurian Candidate. McCain is in a frenzy to push foreign interests and he certainly is not to be trust in handling WOT. It would be dangerous for this country to have him as POTUS. He is also mentally unstable.

McCain does appear to be in poor physical and mental health.

Then there are his adultery, support of CFR, vote against tax cuts - the list goes on.

I dunno, I live right in the middle of NC, and I'm not seeing it. Of course, I'm not seeing a whole lot of activity, period.

I've seen 2 signs. One for Ron Paul (the paulistas are like roaches!!) and a Guliani '08 Bumper sticker. That's it. The few people that I've talked to about politics have expounded on how they don't like *anyone*, period. I'd say that doesn't bode well for anyone perceived as a "Washington Insider" (McCain, Clinton, Edwards, etc) but that's just my own 2 bit opinion.

Not much for support on the (D) side, either, although I'll admit that I don't pay a whole lot of attention to them.

Plus he’s too OLD.

Dave Barry wrote last week: "Is John McCain, at 117, too old and cranky to be president? Like, during the White House Easter Egg Roll, would he come outside in his bathrobe and yell, 'You kids get off my lawn!'"
