Outrage: Proposals for a loudspeaker to call Muslims to prayer in central Oxford have been attacked by local residents
Local residents have attacked the idea saying it would disrupt the peace and turn the area into a 'Muslim ghetto'.
But the elders said they still intend to seek planning permission to install the loudspeaker.
If granted, they would broadcast a two-minute long call three times a day from the Central Mosque, where up to 700 people gather to worship every Friday.
The idea has gained support from the Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Rev John Pritchard, who last week said those in opposition to the idea should "relax" and "enjoy community diversity".
But residents, who packed out a council meeting last month to signal their outrage, remain set against the plan which they say is an "un-neighbourly intrusion".
They said they would rally to block the proposal when it is submitted to the council in nine months time, when construction on the mosque is complete.
Dr Allan Chapman, 61, who lives near the building, said: "The response against this has been incredible, we have been indundated with calls ranging from stiff upper lip outrage to sheer screaming fury.
"The universal message is what an utter cheek to inflict this on a non-Muslim area of Oxford. If this application goes forward then a large number of angry people are poised to form an opposition to it."
Dr Chapman added the broadcast is not to comparable to the ringing of church bells because: "They are just a signal. The Muslim call is a theological statement."
Residents have said the main objection is the loud amplification of the broadcast.
Elizabeth Mills, 56, said: "We don't have a problem with the Imam climbing to the top of the minaret and shouting.
"But we object to electronic amplification. The Bishop of Oxford might say it's ok but he doesn't have to listen to it."
Martin Stott, 53, a member of the Oxford Oratory, added: "This is not an anti-Muslim thing, it is more about community cohesion."
A spokesman for the Central Mosque said that sounding the call to prayer is a traditional part of the religion.
Sadar Rana, 68, said: "Building work will take another nine months to a year, it is then that we plan to make an application to the council.
"We want to fix a loudspeak to our minaret to broadcast our call to prayer. We would like to have it three times a day but if that is not accepted, then we would like to have it at least on Fridays.
"We do not need the volume to be loud but we want to have the call in some form because it's our tradition."

In a more civilized era, this vile man would be dragged from the pulpit, stripped bare, and tarred and feathered.
No worries, that will all come in time. No need to rush them, they have the long-term view and will keep pushing for the next thousand years, if they are allowed to.

My answer to Oxford Christians and other English Christians. Get to work to win Muslims to Jesus Christ by the Gospel of Christ. Go win their young people. Let them see by your personal witness for Christ that they are not living in a Muslim country.
Without being hateful, be aggressive about Christian evangelism. Why are you allowing Islam to so easily take over your country without a stalwart witness for our Saviour? If you do not believe that Islam intends to absolutely take over the UK, you are deluded.
When a goodly number of young Mohammeds at age 16 or 17 go home and announce, “Wonderful news, I have just accepted Jesus Christ as the Only Begotten Son of God and as my own personal Saviour from sin,” Islamic power will begin to wane. Without Christian courage to personally evangelize Muslims, their power will only increase.

But since this country was founded by revolutionaries who wouldn't be bullied, there are still lots of Americans who, when hearing of such complaints, will only have bigger BBQs and set up big electric fans to deliberately blow pork smoke in the direction of these uptight little robe-wearing crybabies.
And I'd be first in line to do so myself. I won't be pushed around by these pseudo-religious thugs. Let 'em take me to court. I'll fight 'em every time.

I had an interesting morning arriving at work several years ago. On a clear spring day I got out of my car. Moments later my ears were assailed with the most unearthly caterwauling, which I recognized as a Muslim call to prayer over a very powerful loudspeaker. After a few spine-chilling moments, I realized that it was our BattleSim facility down the road testing its systems, but it was enough to make my stomach turn and my hair stand on end whenever I hear it even today.
The truth is, it's only a matter of time before civil war erupts between the Muslims and the Brits. The Muslims are like a fast spreading cancer. They don't integrate into society and try to force their own beliefs on everyone else.
Did Mohammed say it was ‘OK’ to use the devil’s electricity to issue the call to prayer?

The “Islam only” Saudi State funds the Western expansion of Islam. There can be no separation of “church and state” when a foreign state is funding the faith.
And there can be no “cultural exchange” when the host State of the Islamic empire prohibits the practice of any OTHER faith.
It is not a two way street. This is only opening the door for inevitable jihad. Imam agree that jihad is “justified” when a nation tries to supress Islam. So as the muslim community pushes more and more for Islamic law, the harder it is to oppose it (without retribution).
They want you to know that it is time to pray to the one “true” faith.

Noble thought, but I think you should be the first to knock on the door of a Muslim household in the ghetto and try to convert the family.
Of course, the missus may not be around.....she's not allowed to talk to you even if she's not chained to a bedpost......and be sure to discreetly check for anything tubular under the kids tee shirts.
Your sentiments are certainly commendable, but I'd just leave a tract under the door mat and run quickly away.
