Sure, he was a free trader who wanted too open up trade, but he always sought first to protect the sovereignty of the United States and its manufacturing base. He did not confuse free trade with giving the store away.

This free trade ain’t. China slaps tariffs on anything we try to ship into the country and subsudizes anything shipped to the US. That is unfair trade 101.
How do the free traders defend this? Would they howl bloody murder if the US did it?
