A sixth-grade girl at Perry Hall Middle School lied about being sexually assaulted this week in a school restroom, Baltimore County police said yesterday.

Based on their investigation, police concluded that the incident did not occur, said Bill Toohey, a county police spokesman.

Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott D. Shellenberger said that prosecutors have reviewed the facts of the case and decided not to charge the 11-year-old girl...

So now everyone's afraid of evil male construction workers (who haven't done anything) lurking around our kids. What a ridiculous overreaction on the part of the school, and a dangerous message to send about false allegations... that they are valuable because they "raise awareness". This makes me sick to my stomach.

I agree. After reading that article you wonder, why turn the attention away from the lying little s**t?

Wow, I'm sure glad this non-event raises awareeness of a danger that does not exist.

Kudos to the brave little girl who had the fortitude to come forward and bring this psuedo-danger to the public's eye.

This will be a classic case study for a Social Psych curriculum.

Is this the wonderful socialization that homeschoolers are missing? Please remember that someone’s children in this school are “socializing” with this 11 year old girl.

What about our First Amendment Right to free assembly?

Forget about free assembly when it comes to government schools! Unless a parent can afford private school or homeschooling, their child is required to be in the government indoctrination camp. If the parent refuses to cooperate with the government, armed police will soon be at the door. ( Real bullets in those guns on the hip.)

But, but but, kids never, ever lie about stuff like this. Especially if they're "disadvantanged".

I agree with prev. posters - unfortunate that the story turned this back around on the school, instead of simply pointing out that the girl was just an attention-seeker.

Civil suit by the worker against the girl and her family for sullying his reputation. Perhaps against the school also.

In the FR archives is a story about some middle school girls who accused a homeless guy of assaulting them, in an attempt to cover up their skipping school. It took weeks for one of the girls to break down. Then there’s the little teens**t down in Florida, who lied about a teacher touching her; her father assaulted the teacher-and then the video proving the girlthing lied emerged. I believe the father-who at first had FR posters calling for him to be named Dad of the Year-got a year in jail for assault. And there’s been a few incidents of whole elementary or middle school classes colluding in false accusations of molestation, to get rid of too strict teachers-one 6th grade class kept it up for weeks till one boy broke and confessed to the plot. Those Afterschool Specials on ‘what to do when a stranger touches you’ may have “empowered” kids who were/are molested-but they’ve also given nonvictims a good idea of just how easy it is to get rid of unwanted adults, I’m afraid. Who knows how many innocent men are in jail or on registers, because the “victims” didn’t cave and admit they lied?

About 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the girl reported to the principal's office that a man had followed her into the restroom between classes and sexually assaulted her, police said. The girl said she fought off the man, ran out of the restroom and reported the attack to a county police officer stationed at the school, police said.

Police initially incorrectly (??) said yesterday that the girl had admitted to lying, but soon after said she hadn't made such a confession.

Then...

The girl described her alleged attacker as a construction worker employed on a renovation project at the school, but police determined that he had no involvement, Toohey said.

Police said their investigation included interviewing the girl and the worker and reviewing video from one of the school's 18 surveillance cameras.

This makes no sense at all. The police say the worker did nothing, which = the girl lied. If the girl did NOT lie then the police review of "the school's 18 surveillance cameras" should indicate something on the part of the worker, which it did not. If she lied an put an innocent man at risk for years worth of prison time they should lock up the girl for a while so she can figure out this isn’t some soap opera, "obey the law or go to jail" is real for her too.

For a site called "Free Republic", you'd think more people would support the rule of law over vigilante justice - there is a reason why we have trials to determine someone's guilt or innocence before punishing someone.

No matter how much maintaining schools, etc. costs, there will always be some “concerned” parents using any means at their disposal to lobby for further restrictions and safeguards which will insure that the costs continue to spiral. Meanwhile, their kids surf the web for porn, lie on myspace, hang out at malls far from the eyes of their parents, drink, smoke and screw like there’s no tomorrow, and learn the value of showmanship from their hysterical elders.

Boy, you’ll stretch anything at all to fit your agenda won’t you?

“What about our First Amendment Right to free assembly?”

What about it? Has nothing to do with school.

I feel sorry for any boy that meets up with her at some future school dance or party.

Not much of a stretch, actually.

What's your agenda, promotion of government-run edcuation? Are you an assistant principal?

Oh, I forgot, homeschooled kids never lie and they never associate with anybody who lies.

“Are you an assistant principal?”

Nope. Also not a principal, a teacher or an administrator. But I slept in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

My take:
Though relieved to hear the girl hadn't been harmed, parents said the incident helped raise awareness about the potential dangers posed by to contractors working in the buildings during the school day.
They're liable to be falsely accused by some sleazy 11-year-old liar.

I responded to a case just like this once. A girl said she was sexually assaulted on the paths between portable classrooms at the school. She was very distraught, and since the attacker couldn’t be located, there were 2 schools in lockdown for over 2 hours. After checking the security cameras, they determined that she made it all up.

I was pretty outraged that she would lie. Then I realized that her parents had been called 3 hours earlier and told that their daughter had been assaulted. Three hours later, they still hadn’t come. No wonder she was making things up for attention. I don’t know anything about this case, but I would question whether the parents were doing thier job.
