Coburn to Endorse McCain

The McCain camp says their candidate will get a "major endorsement" today in Greenville, South Carolina. MSNBC is reporting that Senator Tom Coburn will endorse John McCain.

Don't get me wrong. It's a solid endorsement, but I don't know if you would consider it a "major endorsement." To be a major endorsement, a person really has to have national name recognition. If you line ten people up, nine out of ten probably couldn't tell you who Coburn is.

Having said that, Coburn is a nice feather in the cap. He's known for shaking up Washington because of his fights against excess federal spending in Washington. In that regard, it's a great fit for the maverick McCain and really a no-brainer. Also, Coburn is a big time social conservative so the fact that a southern senator would come out and support McCain is a big bonus.

We are starting to see a pattern develop here in the Republican nomination fight. McCain is trotting out his Senate buddies to stump for him on the trail. It has the feel of a Washington establishment candidate who is banking on his experience to win the nomination.

Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee go around talking about change and aren't as deeply entrenched with the Washington crowd.

It'll be interesting to see which philosophy and strategy win out.

Very disappointing.

To the extreme. Nobody's perfect, but this is a huge mistake by Coburn.

Brownback is for amnesty and perks for illegal aliens. He sure is not for the best interests of this country. I thought if Coburn endorsed anyone it would be Thompson or Hunter. Why would he endorse McCain - the most liberal candidate whose stand on illegal aliens borders on treason - with with whom he APPEARS to have nothing in common?

I guess you can add Coburn and Kyl to that list for endorsing McCain.

They are both pork-busters, they are both pro-life, they both support victory in Iraq and the GWOT, they both support market based approach to SS, among other things - how can you say they have nothing in common?

Mitt Romney has received the strong endorsement of a consistent conservative, U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), who is a leading figure in the Senate advocating reduced federal budget spending and smaller government. Sen. DeMint is a hero to fiscal conservatives and earned a rating of 100% from the ACU in 2006 with a lifetime rating of 98%.

Also, Romney received the endorsement of Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL) who is a leading fiscal conservative in the U.S. House, head of the House Conservatives Fund and a key player in the Republican Study Committee. Rep. Feeney also serves on the Florida Steering Committee for Mitt Romney. Video: Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL) shares his thoughts on Mitt Romney

I am so disappointed in this I can’t stand it. It’s ridiculous that a princopled man like Coburn would support McCain.

Just got off the phone with Coburn's office....

The rumor is true. He apparently believes in McCain mainly because of two things....Security, and the fact that McCain has never "earmarked" a bill.

I'm sure there's more to it...but that was what I was told...were the main things.

I registered my disgust...and was told I wasn't the only one.

FWIW-

Ratings for the backstabbers would be much more helpful when it comes time to vote for them than the ACU ratings. Every Senator knows which votes will be used to tabulate ACU ratings, and even Specter tries to get on the right side of them prior to his election year. They are a joke.

Any Senator that gets into bed with this disgusting little bitter man is no longer a favorite of mine. This man is a backstabbing little creep who probably is somehow threatening his “friends” to endorse him or else.

Tom Coburn no longer has my respect to endorse this worthless Rino.

It says a lot that every time they show McCain, Lindsey Graham is right there. It makes me want to puke.

That’s right!
And not shocking.
Coburn has got his head on straight and he made a endorsement that he feels is best for the country.

Coburn is NOT a RINO. Neither is Brownback. or Thune.

Agreed - that means I want to dig into his reasoning behind this. He is very conservative.
