On Wednesday, the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta announced a study of reports of an unexplained dermopathy known as Morgellons disease and has issued a $338,000 contract to Kaiser Permanente to aid in research due to the numerous cases being found in Northern California.

Disease symptoms documented by the Mayo Clinic include
- Skin lesions accompanied by intense itching
- Fibers that grow out of the skin tissue, some with a spore like root, which are variously colored and sized, and fluoresce under ultra-violet light.
- Sensation like bugs crawling beneath the skin
- Fatigue that interferes with daily activities
- Inability to concentrate and difficulties with short-term memory
- Behavioral problems
- The CDC also lists joint pain and changes in vision
Some unsubstantiated articles are reporting these fibers as being made from the same material as used in fiber optics.

Marni Soupcoff of Canada's National Post writes:
Strangely, half man half tree is not the only instance of an odd dermatological phenomenon on this weeks Google list; people are also looking up Morgellons disease, a mysterious condition characterized by stubborn open sores and a feeling that unidentified filaments are poking out of the skin. Doctors are not certain whether there is an organic basis for Morgellons, or whether it is actually a psychiatric illness (with the open sores being the result of patients scratching themselves and the filaments being nothing more than pieces of lint or thread).
What's up, Northern California?
Yea, that’s what I usually think, hmm... market’s going down, hell, there’s got to be a creepy disease of unknown origin out there somewhere.
???? Whaaaaa... ?
they are made of glass???
Sounds like meth tweeks tweeking.
maybe they found the cause of liberalism in northern California?
“What’s up, Northern California?”
Spent too much time in the tree tops, I guess. But at least now we can understand why the CA protesters are so determined to save a few trees from being cut down.
San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California.
Fiberglass always made my skin itch. I recommend long sleeves and gloves.
Lesson on logic coming from one who writes about "milk bone underwear"???
How weird. My wife and I watched a Discovery channel show about tree man...in Indonesia, just last night!
Pay particular attention to the picture of his hands...looks like a tree stump.

It turns out these are warts, and the reason he had them so bad, his immune system is shot. The MD was going to try something systemic but the story eneded with him putting the treatment on hold because he went back working in the circus. Apparently he can make a decent living and stay with his other debilitated friends by performing as a freak in a sideshow. They showed him and his deformed friends working a “fashion show” with very young girls modeling clothes. Weird combo to say the least!
Man, it’s a quote from a movie for chrissakes.
‘It’s a dog eat dog world out there, and I’m wearing milk bone underwear’.
I’ve just adjusted it for the financial world.
So. As I have now connected my dots for you, perhaps you’d care to enlighten me how exactly you went from ‘down market’ to ‘weird disease’.
He stopped getting them completely when we moved to Texas. They didn't hurt or itch or irritate in any way. As they never gave *him* any concern and they did go away we've just shrugged and moved on. I have always wondered if it was a strange fungal infection or something like that.
With all the doom and gloom pushed onto us everyday by the media, I was surprised the media had not found a weird disease to frighten some with. Always bad news with these people, and proved myself right, when I found a disease right of the bat. So Northern California, watch out!
Doom and gloom is a disease with these media people. However, there is nothing really funny about any disease, so would not wish to offend anyone growing tree roots out of their extremities. It was just an attempt at "satire but reality".
Moral of the story is: There is always someone out there worse off than we are.
