City Backs Away From Plan for Day Laborers' Center

Realizing they were about to thrust the city smack into the middle of the national immigration debate, San Antonio leaders are now balking at the idea of opening a center for day laborers.

Resurrected in the fall as a full-fledged project after more than two decades of inaction, the City Council was poised this month to consider a staff proposal to create a facility where workers, mostly undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America, could gather and be hired.

After twice tabling the issue, a presentation scheduled for Tuesday was scrapped indefinitely by council members who said the proposal needed more work and that other large-scale projects such as the River Walk expansion or Main Plaza renovation were more pressing priorities.

"Immigration may not be the issue now, but it's not that much of leap to see it taking over," Mayor Phil Hardberger said. "We wouldn't be able to get anything done if we continued down that road."

My nephew is a Doctor. He was offered a partnership in a medical office in San Antonio, but he and his wife refused it because of such situations. Perhaps he will reconsider after this action by the Council, but after Oklahoma passed their very restrictive law affecting illegals, our illegals are leaving for other areas—including San Antonio, unfortunately.

San Antonio

Has alway been a dirty little military town, a stop off on the way to Laredo today. When I was there years ago, I went down to see the Alamo. Walked around it four times looking for it, what a disappointment, but I was hit on by a couple of hookers on main street and found that interesting.

Went to Fiesta Texas last summer over 4th of July for first time in 3 years. Only one of a few non-Mexican families there. Dirty, crowded, noisy, trashy. They’ve taken over what used to be a cool place to go. No American flags and only Tejano music. Took it off the list!

My brother and his housing contractor friend in the resort areas of the NC mountains have made mention that illegals have cut their prices even more which has seriously hurt their livelihoods. Some illegals are now working for $6 /hr from what they’ve said, however, the quality of their work (the illegals) is so shabby, many buyer’s do not have a clue as to the structural and cosmetic problems that lie ahead in their ‘deal’ homes in the steep slopes and harsh environment.
