Hate and bigotry among items cited in critical report as conference opens
A national immigrant advocacy organization on Thursday released a report that accused U.S. officials of stepping up workplace raids and immigration sweeps to "instill fear in communities."
The report's release coincides with the opening of a national conference for the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, which will be held today through Sunday at the downtown Houston Hyatt. The California-based group outlined a wide range of alleged human rights violations in its 108-page report, "Over-raided, Under Siege," based largely on news reports and interviews with community leaders.
Arnoldo Garcia, the director of the Immigrant Justice & Rights Program at NNIRR, described a "climate of hate and intolerance and bigotry" against immigrants in much of America. He said the report raises important questions about the timing and legality of recent immigration raids, citing a sweep last year in New Haven, Conn., that was conducted two days after the city approved issuing a municipal ID card that would allow all residents regardless of their citizenship to access certain city services.
"When they do those raids, it's a scary thing for people to see," Garcia said. "It intimidates people into giving up their rights. It's very deliberate."
Kelly Nantel, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, disputed the allegations and said the raid in New Haven was planned more than a month in advance.
"ICE is a law enforcement agency," she said. "We are not trying to strike fear into anyone. We are enforcing the law. I think the American public has made it crystal clear that that is what they want."
Garcia said the conference organizers chose to hold the conference in Houston in part because of the city's size and diversity,

Swinney Switch, Could you please do a better job of controling these out of control open borders people in Texas PLEASE! I am getting pretty tired of this! :-)
Should read:
A national illegal immigrant advocacy organization
If they aren’t instilling fear, they should be. I have my serious doubts any fear is being instilled in anyone, when they feel comfortable enough to demonstrate in the hundreds of thousands.
Notice the guy made a lot of spurious claims and assertions and backed it up with absolutely nothing. It is also of note that he kept using “immigrants” when we all knew he was talking about illegal invaders. This type of person would be better served if he would remain silent and perpetrate his grab for power within the illegal community. Just keep cruising under the radar, mi amigo. There is only one candidate currently running for president, who has ever done anything or is likely to do anything in the future to stop illegal immigration. Patience mi amigo, amnesty is on the way, perhaps not in the pretty package you wanted, but it’s coming.
Breaking into the United States of America, stealing a SSN, assuming a fake Identity, taking out a mortgage using the false SSN, using our Nations emergency medical services, sending their children to our schools, joining gangs and gunning down law enforcement personnel, slinging drugs in our communities, burning the American flag, then demanding more rights than a naturalized American, throwing stones at US Border Agents, raping our children, murdering our fellow Countrymen and Women, driving without a drivers license, no insurance, and under the influence and killing our young adults on our highways, singing illegally up for welfare under a false name, and address, getting paid in cash, then sending the cash back to Mexico instead of paying for their free schooling and free medical care they have received after breaking into our Country, gang banging, carving out territory as if the illegal alien gang members own it, and them murdering any American who dares cross into that claimed area, willing to work for a third of a normal wage, driving down an honest wage and keeping it artificially below a good working wage so that only an illegal will work for it, painting graffiti on our Public property, terrorizing our Communities by marching in force demanding amnesty for first giving us the middle finger when it comes to our laws, then committing numerous felonies while illegally in our Country, stealing anything that is not nailed down, then to top it off, the illegal alien claims that they are just taking back from us the part of the United States we as Americans stole form them first!
You damn right the illegals instill fear in our Communities!! They should be each and every one of them found arrested and sent back to the Country of origin immediately.
There, corrected.
Those breaking the law should fear law enforcement. However, I fear that the general election is shaping up to be a choice between those who openly favor amnesty and those who openly favor amnesty, but want to call it “a path to citizenship.”
Where am I going wrong?
Hating criminal activity is good. Abuse is in the eye of the beholder.
If there is fear of being a criminal illegal, leave.
Gee, I have no doubts, no doubts about the accuracy now.

who cares what these so-called groups say....round all the illegals up and send them back to mexico!!!!
what is so difficult to understand about the word illegal???
It intimidates people into giving up their rights.
What rights? Illegal immigrants should have NO rights in this country. They should be in their own countries and enjoying the rights of the countries they came from. We do not owe them any rights while they are illegal.
