Fred update: He’s staying if he finishes third in SC; Update: Fred third in SC

Watch as the goalposts move before your very eyes, with less contested southern states like Georgia and Tennessee now the benchmark for voter enthusiasm.

Third in SC is very much a possibility, of course — but early indications from Carl Cameron are not good.

Politico says he sounds wistful on the trail today while the NYT seizes one last opportunity to snark. “Amen! Tell the truth, Fred! Amen!”

Update: Victory in defeat:

Over the past month, Huckabee first surged in polls of South Carolina Republicans, from fifth place to, for a time, a solid first place. Over the past two weeks, however, he has fallen behind McCain, largely for two reasons: McCain got a major boost from his January 8 New Hampshire win, and the struggling campaign of Fred Thompson made a last ditch effort to get on track here. While well behind and tied for third place with Romney, Thompson did make gains, and the data suggest that virtually every point Thompson picked up came out of Huckabee’s hide.

I hope he’s 4th and out so we can quit wasting time on him and deal with actual contenders.

Great move by Huckleberry to get on the SC flag issue. Too bad he might actually win the nomination now though.

I just got “polled” I told her I was voting for Fred Thompson before she could get the rest of the names out.

Hey Newbie... Way to go in attempting to suppress the vote for the conservative. Even if you believe the exit polling data, which has certainly been way off before, Fred is very close to Romney for a 3rd.

The early release of this exit poll is designed to demoralize Fred supporters and convince those who have not yet voted that it’s a lost cause.

Don’t fall for it, SC. If you have not yet voted, cast your vote.

That says among “conversatives”. Are there composite numbers?

And why are all these “conservatives” for the most liberal two candidates?

Are those numbers for Republican primary voters or only for a conservative segment? I seems to be only among those who described themselves ‘conservatives’, right?

First it was, wait till Fred really works the crowd in Iowa the last two weeks, then it was hes not in NH because northerners dont like him and their too RINO like. Then it was wait till hes in SC and see how the real conservatives down there will warm up to him. Now its, even a third place will keep him alive.
Poorly run campaign, entered too late, little spark or enthusiam, too bad but “hes dead Jim”.

Fred is about 10 years too old and not perky enough to successfully run for Pres. in this plastic, shallow, media-frenzied society of ours. Otherwise he would be a great conservative president IMHO.

This is following the Iowa scenario for Fred. Optimism here early on that he would get a solid third with some hoping for second. Same thing in SC. The news has been trending negative all day. I’m afraid Fred Heads will be disappointed tonight. That includes me. I’ll be happy to eat crow if he gets third or better.

It is interesting that Romney is third after spending the most time and money in North Carolina.

As much as I'd have to hold my nose, I'd consider voting for him just to keep the Clintons out of the White House.

Great move by Huckleberry to get on the SC flag issue.

If a stupid flag is what made the difference, then my opinion of SC voters can't get any lower.
