Fred update: He’s staying if he finishes third in SC; Update: Fred third in SC

Watch as the goalposts move before your very eyes, with less contested southern states like Georgia and Tennessee now the benchmark for voter enthusiasm.

Third in SC is very much a possibility, of course — but early indications from Carl Cameron are not good.

Politico says he sounds wistful on the trail today while the NYT seizes one last opportunity to snark. “Amen! Tell the truth, Fred! Amen!”

Update: Victory in defeat:

Over the past month, Huckabee first surged in polls of South Carolina Republicans, from fifth place to, for a time, a solid first place. Over the past two weeks, however, he has fallen behind McCain, largely for two reasons: McCain got a major boost from his January 8 New Hampshire win, and the struggling campaign of Fred Thompson made a last ditch effort to get on track here. While well behind and tied for third place with Romney, Thompson did make gains, and the data suggest that virtually every point Thompson picked up came out of Huckabee’s hide.

You must be stupid if you think any of us accept that line.

However, he polls the WORST by far against Hillary and Obama.

Trust me, that will change.

You can support McCain if you want. He stepped on his John Thomas over this issue.

It is interesting that Romney is third after spending the most time and money in North Carolina.

No wonder. He should have been spending his time and money in South Carolina.

If Goober Graham’s state of South Carolina, rejects Fred for the likes of McCain and Huckabee, then shame on them. I will never vote Democrat for President, but I might go half way. I would vote third party for Lou Dobbs, he is to the right of the remaining field both Democrat and Republican on ILLEGAL immigration.

If both Hunter and Thompson drop out before the Illinois primary, I probably won’t even bother to vote. It makes no difference at all to me which rino is the nominee.

I hope he’s 4th and out so we can quit wasting time on him and deal with actual contenders.

Wasting time? Gee thanks. As a first time voter Fred's the only Republican I'd vote for in the upcoming election.

Can I assume by your screen name you're supporting the Hillbilly From Hope"?

Yes it is, dip. Huck said it is a state issue. He said if anyone came to his state telling him what to do with the flag he’d tell them what to do with the pole. It was a great soundbite that got lots of press. Pay attention.

I don’t think so, and neither would you if you even had a clue as to what having integrity really means.

“As much as I’d have to hold my nose”

You and me both, brother.

ANY and I mean ANY Republican is preferable to Obama/Hillary.

This may well prove to be the greatest vote-against election in U.S. history. As a kid I was astounded when my Dad said, “son, in any election you can vote four ways!”

“plastic, shallow, media-frenzied society of ours”

POTD. Sadly, this apparently describes mainstream conservatives as much as anyone else now. If “conservatives” prefer Huck and McCain over someone like Fred, or even Romney, I am no longer a conservative.

Say what you will about McCain, but Huckabee is more conservative than Romney on any issue.

1-Romney said that Bush's immigration plan was not amnesty.

2-Romney has been very consistent on his pro-choice stance. He has never changed his position, just the way he talks about.

3-He is very pro-gay.

4-Thanks to his health care plan, if you don't have health insurance in MA, you will get a monthly fine and your wages garnished.

5-He didn't raise taxes, he just raised fees by $500,000,000, and proposed millions more in tax hikes on businesses.

6-I don't think he ever cut taxes. If he has I haven't heard about it.

7-He ran an all out (democrat style) smear campaign against Huckabee in Iowa and lost.

8-He wants to work on a "World Solution" to fight global warming.

9-His 2nd amendment positions are questionable at best.

The only thing he has going for him, is the media doesn't like him, but the media doesn't like David Duke either and I would never vote for him.
