Rep. Steve King of Iowa is here in South Carolina supporting Fred Thompson, and he took a few minutes tonight to talk to NRO about the implications of today's primary results for voters whose key issue is illegal immigration. When I asked King which candidate these voters should support if Thompson ends up dropping out of the race, he said, "My friend, the question you just asked me is the very question I'd be asking myself."
On McCain's victory, King said, "If your average voter starts paying attention to the race ten days before the vote, and they hear a guy talking about how badly we need to secure the borders," (as McCain has been doing on the stump lately), "they're going to assume that he understands the importance of the issue" — even though McCain has only recently adopted that rhetoric.
Without saying anything about Fred's future plans, King put it this way: "I've spent the last five years trying to convince the White House to take securing the borders seriously, and at this point, I'm preparing myself to keep doing this for another five years."
Fred needs to fight on all the way to the convention. He can succeed at the GOP convention where Ronald Reagan failed in 1976.
Fred’s fight will be on the convention floor, for leadership and party unity.
Fred has an important job to do still. He must keep the nomination far out of reach of Mike Huckabee. And he must bring the party together as the consensus conservative choice when no candidate comes up with enough delegates to win the nomination.
Keep on fighting Fred!
The Democrat field is all closet Marxists. And the Republican field is being narrowed down to three FDR, JFK, and Jimmy Carter clones who all claim to be the rightful heir to Ronald Reagan's mantle.
Maybe Steve King should have endorsed the one who IS strong on border security. Like most of the country, I guess he blew it. Ignorance may be bliss but in this election ignorance may prove to be very dangerous.
He endorsed the man who had the best chance. Did Hunter even get a thousand votes? I hope Fred stays through Super Tuesday at least. We will all have to wait and see.

JFK was probably more conservative then the front runners we have today. Sad but true.
Conservatives WANTED to believe in Fred.
We WANTED to believe he would be able to energize and solidify the Republican base, and lead us into a new era of strength, prosperity and conservative dominance.
But it’s more than obvious that Fred is past his prime. He is uninspiring and too lethargic to get Republicans excited. (sorry for the crudeness).
Just like Bob Dole, Fred is a great conservative but a lousy politician and campaigner. Which is VERY important in winning the general election.
More importantly, Fred is ALSO part of that Washington DC insider good ol’ boy network which has caused so many problems for the GOP and America.
Same with McCain.
Only Huckabee and Romney are ‘outsiders’ and would thus bring in some fresh leadership ideas.
Huckabee scares me and others to Kingdom come, and would destroy the GOP for decades.
Which is why so many of us are excited about Mitt Romney, his fresh face... his fresh approach to conservative ideas and promotion.
The Dems Idolize the guy and forget about his economics, they just fondly remember how he was shagging Marilyn while Cubans were dying. He Inspired Bill Clinton to follow in his footsteps. Too bad Bill humped a fat chick and did not get shot by a liberal Marx-man, he could have been famous!
I don’t see him as a threat any longer.
When you see how little he will get in Florida, then that will be a lagging indicator that may prove my contention.
As for the rest, well...
I’m preparing to predict a clinton win.
The majority of the American people are not capable of going beyond what the media tells them. The MSM as well as much of the blogs, said Fred was a joke before he even got in. Brit Hume poo pooed Fred before he got in, Charles Croutheimer(sp) said there was “no there there” with Fred on a number of occasions, the American people are not very bright!
What happened to the Republicans that cost us the senate in 2006 because they where so upset about immigration? Have they now decided McCain is ok? It would seem so! You see they are not very bright either!
Romney's not a top tier candidate? He's strong on securing the border.
Of the top three candidates now, only ONE is okay with Rush. Limbaugh has stated that McCain or the Huckster would be disasters for the Republicans.
Long time lurker, first time poster. I have been a Thompson supporter from the start but it is becoming increasingly obvious to me that his presence in the primaries is siphoning votes from Huckabee and benefiting McLame. Thompson’s withdraw would do more damage to the McLame campaign than to all other republican campaigns combined.
Again, it is pretty easy to toss out conservative talk....but if Fred actually endorses that RINO McKennedy, nothing he said means alot.
It means he is just another lying politician.
Isn’t that a tautology? If his withdrawal hurts McCain, then it must by definition help “all other Republican campaigns combined,” by an equal amount.
Correction. It would help all “all other Republican campaigns combined” by an amount equal to the amount it hurt McCain, plus the probability that Thompson himself had before his withdrawal. The statement is still a tautology though.
You might as well face it. Fred waited too long to get in and didn’t inspire enough people with his message. I think he doesn’t have the fire in the belly it takes to win. I am a big fan of Fred’s but he even said that he is not obsessed with the nomination, and can live without it.
So, our choices are now, Mitt or John McCain. As much as I dislike McCain, if the option is staying home and giving it to Hillary, I’m voting for John McCain. Something is better than nothing. Conservatives, please don’t sit this one out. Maybe in four years, we’ll have another conservative choice. We simply can’t afford Hillary or Barack. Please consider this seriously. NO candidate will agree with every position you find important. Hillary and Barack scare me. They are socialists and MUST NOT WIN.
We had a candidate who did what the pundits always said that they and the people wanted. He laid out clear positions and ran on what he would do. Then they all ignored the candidate and positions and talked about what they have submitted that they hate.
The journalists are full of crap. But it worked to this point. Rhetoric and media image is winning over debate on the issues. Did I mention that the journalists are so full of crap?
BTW, I'll keep working for Fred as long as he keeps fighting.
