Google it and you will get about a million hits.

Here is Malkin's latest on it:

He was also a victim of an embarrassing Hillary Clinton whopper. Hilary scaled Everest in 1953. Hillary Clinton claimed for more than a decade that she was named after the climber–even though she was born in 1947, six years before he rose to worldwide prominence.

She finally admitted the lie in October 2006. In typical Clintonesque fashion, her campaign blamed her poor mother:

Here is one that has comment and analysis on her being named after him by her mother. (Snopes)

You said she claimed she was related to him, not named after him.

I trust that you do appreciate the difference.

The first American Expedition in an attempt to summit without O2 was in 1962 and is known as the Sayer Expedition. This was a very controversial matter. To this day that attempt is not recognized by climbing organizations as legitimate. Roger Hart, a college professor & friend of mine was on that expedition as well as the grandson of former President Woodrow Wilson, Woodrow Wilson Sayer. There is so much controversy here that the only way to the truth is to read the books by Sayer, “Four Against Everest”, and that by Hart, “The Phaselock Code” also known as “The Man Who Fell Off Everest”.

What is a traditional Maori wake like?

Not sure how it would work with someone who's being given a state funeral. Traditionally, the wake is held at the family's home & everyone gathers there. Family members take turns staying with the deceased, so the deceased is never left alone. As naturalman said, the Guest of Honour is present in an open coffin. Someone is with them 24/7. It lasts for three days & after the funeral everyone gathers again for food & drink.

Rest in peace Sir Hillary

[didn’t hillary claim his heritage and name a little while ago?]

Hillary claimed she was named after him!

Use Google yourself then.

I did and I can't find a single source that has Clinton making the claim that she was related to Sir Edmund.

That's odd, isn't it?

Perhaps you made a mistake.

I finally found a source that says Clinton claimed she was related to Sir Edmund.

I don't know how reputable the source is, but, FWIW......

first American to reach the summit of Everest

But our Hillary was right behind him, if I recall correctly. At least that's what she told me.

This is a link to a New Zealand newspaper article about the funeral.

Another one here.

As Sir Ed was not a Maori, he is of course not having a traditional Maori funeral, and also no tangi. However Maori were present at the start of the service to perform a traditional haka/karanga as a way of showing their respect for the mountaineeer as his casket was bought into the cathedral.

There will be another service tomorrow, Tuesday.
