(Florida Senator Mel)Martinez decides not to back McCain

MIAMI- Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida has decided not to endorse Republican presidential hopeful Arizona Sen. John McCain.

McCain was planning to campaign Monday in Miami with Martinez to help woo Hispanic voters,The Miami Herald reported Sunday.

A factor in Martinez's decision to withhold his endorsement of McCain's candidacy is that he feels badly for McCain rival, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was a Martinez supporter and had expected his backing in return, the newspaper reported.

McCain supporters had been told by the campaign late last week that Martinez was coming to stump with the Arizona senator. But, they said, Giuliani supporters -- who played a key role in Martinez's narrow 2004 Senate win -- swayed Martinez to remain neutral.

''Mel's a tower of Jell-O,'' said Republican operative Roger Stone, a McCain backer. "He was committed to McCain, and given McCain's role in the fight over immigration, and given the fact he's going to win South Carolina tonight, Mel Martinez should have done what he said and gone with the guy who will be president.''

Guiliani has staked his presidential campaign on a win in Florida, and has campaigned hard there after largely sidestepping other early nominating contests.

Pop some popcorn, the RINOs are mud wrestling! After all Juan did to try and win amnesty for 30 million illegal alien Hispanics, and this is the thanks he gets!

''Mel's a tower of Jell-O,'' That's priceless!!

“Pop some popcorn”

Too late, Huckabee is already frying some squirrel in there.

Mel is an open borders RINO scum.

To think he was RNC Chairman!

"Mel is an open borders RINO scum."

That's why I'm surprised at this: So is McCain. Birds of a feather and all that.

Of course the same could be said about all the others still in, except Thompson and MAYBE Romney, depending on how far you are willing to trust him..

Yeah, that will sure help woo Martinez. LOL!

Come on, Fred, I just looked at the Florida numbers. Unless it's true that 40% of voters have already voted, I'd say come on down. The spread is doable.

What on earth? Why would he burn bridges like that? That was rude beyond all belief. If he won’t endorse he gets called chilish names instead?

Courtesy, professionalism and human decency... none of which were in that statement to the press.

Not all that surprising. Mel was a product of the RNC ‘brain trust’ same as Rudy. Him not backing Mitt is the surprising part. Political theater to keep Mitt distanced from the RNC open borders agenda?

Mel (Mr. Amnesty) Martinez is my p.o.s. senator from Florida.
We voted him into office simply to keep Betty Castor out.
You may remember her the former president of the University of South florida? The one who took Sami Al Arens side though he was the head fundraiser for terrorist mooselimbs.
Mel is a Bush butt boy and led the effort to allow twenty million folks who came here illegally to stay.
Martinez isn’t worth the air he breaths.

Senator Illegal Alien (Mel Martinez) isnt supporting his fellow illegal-lover McCain?

Maybe because Rudy is more pro-illegal.

I was surprised to see the very conservative Sen Tom Cole supporting McCain. Did Cole support McCain’s immigration bill?

Wow.. "Hey Mel, you're Hispanic! That means you have to support the pro-amnesty candidate, right?!"

A real class act, that Roger Stone.

Given that Mel probably won’t get reelected I’d think McCain’s campaign would be glad to have lost Martinez’s support.

Mel’s endorsement = Florida loss

"Why would he burn bridges like that?"

He lied to Florida voters about illegal immigration to get elected so why wouldn't he lie to everyone else?

Perhaps this signals a tangible change in direction for McCain’s original amnesty position. Martinez’ endorsement is kryptonite for any candidate in Florida.

Look at Florida as two states.

North Florida is a Southern State and South Florida is a Blue State.

If Huckabee wins North Florida, and Rudy does well enough to split the South Florida vote with McCain, Huckabee wins Florida.
