NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is trailing in the race for the Republican presidential nomination even on his home turf of New York state, a new poll showed on Monday.
The WNBC/Marist poll ahead of the February 5 primaries in New York showed 34 percent of registered Republicans support John McCain, compared to 23 percent for Giuliani. Among Republicans likely to vote, McCain kept his 34 percent support, while Giuliani was tied in second place with Mitt Romney at 19 percent.
McCain's campaign has been boosted by wins in New Hampshire and South Carolina in the state-by-state race to pick the two candidates to contest the November 4 election to succeed President George W. Bush.
Giuliani, whose once large lead in national polls has evaporated, largely bypassed early voting states and focused on Florida, which votes on January 29.
As the former New York mayor who won national recognition in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, Giuliani would hope for a strong showing in New York.
But the poll showed 46 percent of registered Republicans in New York think Arizona Sen. McCain is the Republican most likely to beat the Democratic candidate in November. Nineteen percent saw former Massachusetts Gov. Romney as the most electable and 15 percent picked Giuliani as most electable.
Another local politician, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, appeared to be in a strong position ahead of the New York primary for the Democratic Party nomination.
The poll showed her with the support of 48 percent of Democrats likely to vote in the primary, followed by Illinois Sen. Barack Obama with 32 percent.
The survey of 1,467 New York state registered voters was conducted January 15-17, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent, the poll said.
Neither party has established a clear front-runner, as the first major state-by-state battles produced multiple winners.
Look, for those of you who weren’t in NYC in the early 70’s, comparing NYC between then and now is like night and day. Rudy did a great job of cleaning a horrible mess up. It is unfortunate that all of the scumbags have moved upstate and are living on Mather and North Street!!!
I agree, I remember how horrible places like Times Square was. Whatever you dislike about the man, Rudy definately got results in office.
Rudy is toast. Huckabee will be toast on or before Super Tuesday. Romney’s less-questionable conservatism, greater money and organization, and superior debating skills should result in his defeating McCain (nationally, and in any primary where only registered Republicans can vote.)
He’s right, Rudy is a loser, at least in this election process.
There goes the, 'but Rudy will put the Blue States in play' canard. 
So, will Rudy be the next to drop out? It looks like Feb 5th will be a bloodbath for him - and he hates being embarrassed (real reason he booked from NY senate race). I think yes, plus he's broke.

With McCain and Giuliani splitting the RINO vote, Romney could take the nomination on Feb 5th.

This is exactly why the stake needs to be driven through McCain in Florida. His national front-runner status needs to be put to rest.
I think Mitt could pull off a win in Florida. And then a win in Maine (a closed Caucus—not to McCain’s advantage) on February 1 that could very well push him over the top. But things have to fall together.
There was something several weeks ago on here that said the NY pols were having 2nd thoughts and abandoning support for Rudy, so this is hardly a surprise.
My only problem is figuring out who I dislike more: Rudy or McCain. Will NEVER under any conditions, including another President Clinton, vote for either of them.
If Mitt is your man, then keeping McCain in the race is to your advantage. Rudy and McCain draw from the same well. Back in 2007, Rudy was hoping for a divided conservative field to win. With McCain rising and conservatives beginning to rally around Mitt, Romney could win FL and California.
That's a shame, I wanted my vote to matter on March 4th....
Oh well if it kills the RudyMcCain moster sooner, so be it.

Only if Rudy loses Florida. If he wins Florida by any margin, Rudy becomes the story for a while and obtains some momentum to turn some of those poll numbers around. For the last month, the only Giuliani stories you have heard have been about his poor performances (in states where he didn't campaign seriously). Giuliani's wait-until-Florida strategy had one big flaw: he didn't expect the lack of news coverage to render him irrelevant. If Giuliani wins Florida, he becomes a factor and will remain so through the convention.
That’s all irrelevant, since he won’t win Florida.
While I am hoping for a conservative (Fred or Mitt), Rudy has at least accomplished things McCain could only dream of.
If anyone ever spent time in NYC during the General Dinkens era and then after Rudy had been mayor for a while, you know the difference. Gotta give Rudy a lot of credit for making a then hopeless city cleaner, safer and worth spending time in.
Possibly. However, if Fred isn't going to win the nomination (and my head knows it but my heart isn't giving up yet), I'm hoping for a brokered convention where we can wipe the slate clean of these RINOs and start over. Giuliani holding a block of delegates would be helpful to getting a brokered convention.
Cameron twice this morning from florida did not mention romney. i watched a while ago, he said something about romney being a toss up with huck for something as an after thought. geez. I am now cured of FNC and my tv will be turned on for movies only.

If he loses Florida, or wins Florida but loses on Super Tuesday. If he loses Florida - they won’t have to ask. Minus that momentum, he can’t win anything. And I might have to throw a party. For real. I just won’t tell anyone why I’m having it.
The bad news for Giuliani comes on top of a poll taken several weeks ago showing Bloomberg doing better than Rudy w/ the NY vote.
Giuliani's tanking is due to:
(1) Bernie Kerik's legal problems (Kerik is Rudy's former driver, bodyguard, police Commissioner, business partner, failed Homeland nominee, and admitted felon (in that order),
(2) Rooty's porking his mistress on the public dime, and hiding the theft of public services in obscure city agencies, and,
(3) Rooty's secrecy about his business dealings (a bonanza for global Rudy if Giuliani ever got his hands on the federal budget).
Giuiani is misleading voters---his top staffers are working gratis---so Giuliani wants voters to think he managed to spend all his campaign money without having actually competed in any of the early primary/caucus states.

The truth is that Rudy spent all his money because he HAS competed in all those states. The number of times Rooty went to New Hampshire to campaign was second only to Romney.
Rudy just CLAIMS he hasn't been competing in all these states because the results have been so dismal. The voters have caught on to Rudy and have rejected him as a candidate.
Although he tries to cast himself as a warrior, he folds, and then cuts and runs each time he feels any competitive pressure. Thus, he chickened out of the Senate race vs. Hillary. More recently, he cut and run in Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan, and now South Carolina.
He's the gutless warrior. Rudy is a talker, not a fighter. He has to win Florida or he's a goner.
A brokered convention would be great, if it resulted in Fred being the nominee. But I don't (yet) see that as a likely future.
