From my first hand observations, equality of opportunity has been a reality for at least 30 years. Failure to seize that opportunity remains the main problem.

It is a major problem. The inequality of opportunity today is not in hiring or college admissions, but in the inequality of preparation for those opportunities -- because the poor, disproportionately but not all or even mostly black, go to crappy schools, come from broken families, and while many make poor choices, many are also burdened by the poor choices of their parents.

It's not just a mater of bad choices by individuals. It's a culture that makes bad choices easier and good choices more difficult. Where academic achievement is "acting white" and acting like a thug is "keepin' it real." That, not systemic racism, is the problem facing Black Americans today.

I would like to think, had he lived to today, Dr. King would be on the podium opposite Bill Cosby. I'm not confident, but I'd like to think.

Nicely done, Mayor. Takin' Bill to the woodshed right smack in the Capitol of the South. Send Bubba back where he came from.

Don't mess with our Mayor Shirley. She's a liberal Democrat, to be sure, but in what counts most in a mayor -- clean government, effective management, law and order, fixing the infrastructure -- she has gone a long way toward turning this city around. Of course, my dead aunt Fannie would have been an improvement over Bill Campbell.

“Earlier in her address, Franklin said the country was nearing a historic occasion when it could elect as president, “a former first lady, a Mormon, a Baptist preacher, and yes, a black man.”

The first lady is Hillary Clinton, the Mormon is Republican Mitt Romney, the Baptist preacher is Huckabee, and the “black man” is Obama.”

I love the fact that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution placed quotation marks around “black man” when referring to Obama. It would have been even better had they also placed quotes around “lady” when referring to Hillary. : )

Franklin said the country is on the "cusp of turning the impossible into reality. Yes this is reality, not fantasy or fairy tales."

Yikes. Is she still alive?

I agree about no history.
How sad that history is not taught in schools anymore well except the PC history that is.

Most people think the civil war was based on slavery and to free the blacks, they think that the north went to war to save the blacks. They think the confederate flag is racist.
I’m down south in northern Florida and the amount of times I’ve heard ignorant northerners say how they are disgusted to see a a confederate flag is beyond belief.

Mayybe these people if theybhad been taught history would know what they are talking about instead of just being PC and listening to the MSM propaganda

the Dems after using the race card for so long and cow toeing to blacks are now seeing that no matter what you say or do for them then in the end blacks , well not all but most will vote for a black man or woman just because they are black .
They are now seeing that blacks will always take a black persons side .

Now we have a black man running for president then now can we get rid of the racist policy of affirmative action as this just proves that blacks can run for the highest position in the country.
No need for affirmative action anymore, it was racist to start with against whites and no the time is to get rid of it.

Five seats to Clinton’s left sat another former Arkansas govenor, Republican Mike Huckabee, also seeking his party’s nomination as president. He stood at the end of Franklin’s remarks.

Why am I not surprised it happened to be Mike Huckabee there when Clinton was?
