Data: Combat hasn’t caused murder spike

Twelve Fort Bragg soldiers have been accused of killing 13 people in the six-plus years since Sept. 11, 2001, according to Observer records. In the six years before the terrorist attacks, 16 Fort Bragg soldiers were accused of killing 18 people.

Those numbers came from a search of the Observer’s archives and may not be conclusive. Law enforcement agencies do not track killings by whether the accused was a soldier. The Observer examined its own records after a New York Times story published Jan. 13 indicated that homicides involving active-duty service members and new veterans rose 89 percent during the past six years.

The New York Times found 121 cases in which veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan were charged with or convicted of a killing in the United States. Five of those cases involved Fort Bragg soldiers, including one case where a Fort Stewart, Ga., soldier was charged with killing a Fort Bragg soldier — his wife — in Raeford in 2006.

The Times story has provoked national debate about whether veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan are more prone to violence — and about whether military programs to catch and treat combat-related stress are working.

Of course the Fay Observer published the NY Slimes story the day after it ran their paper.

maybe they had to publish this story because way too many people in the area are vets from the Gulf Wars.

It ain’t the vets you have to worry about walking down the Murk.

and I suspect that if you compare that rate of GI homicides with homicides in any major city in the US you will find the GI rate much lower. I don’t have the figures in my head but they are available and, “Ummm, isn’t this interesting.”

Bill Mauldin of Willie and Joe fame did an interesting cartoon after the war.
Willie is setting at home reading the newspaper. On the front page is the headline “SOLDIER SLAPS AUNT”. Willie says to his wife..”here is a story of a triple ax murder on page three. No GIs involved.”

Those figures have been posted here in the last week or so, from some very reputable folks like Ralph Peters.

IIRC, the same age group of non-military males is 3-5 times more likely to be charged for murder and about the same ratio applies to their chances of being murdered.

So, military service over the last 6 years makes a young man less violent and more safe than his civilian peers.

The bears repeating. The US experience is that ex-military men have more self control, and more internal discipline, than those who have not had the experience.

It is only a recent myth that men with military experience are more criminaly violent.
