MIAMI (AFP) - Jose Padilla, the US citizen arrested in 2002 for an alleged dirty bomb plot only to see those charges disappear three years later, was sentenced to more than 17 years in prison Tuesday for supporting the Al-Qaeda terror network. ADVERTISEMENT

Two other men accused of plotting with Padilla, Adham Amin Hassoun and Kifah Wael Jayyousi, also received lengthy prison terms: 15 years and eight months for Hassoun and 12 years and eight months for Jayyousi.

Miami federal judge Marcia Cook said there was not enough support for the charges to give Padilla the maximum life sentence requested by the government, and said the government's "harsh" treatment of him since his arrest was a mitigating factor in handing down his sentence of 17 years and four months.

Oh, poor baby! He wanted to blow up Chicago and kill several hundred thousand Americans, and the big bad government was mean to him! We didn't give him a lollipop and let him call his mother!

SHEESH!!

Federal system is 52 days/year maximum off your sentence for good behavior. If he qualifies-he’ll be do a little less than 15 years before release.

Depends on what the Judge ordered at sentencing. Based upon this Judges’ remarks-I would say that is probably going to be the case, but without seeing the actual judgement order that is pure speculation on my part....

Hopefully we don’t get to see it 20 more times as every other newspaper in the country picks up the story.

Suspect? After conviction are you still a suspect?

One of her two first listed jobs out of law school was as a defense attorney and the other one may have been also. She still is a defense attorney at heart.

Ought to be some kind of rule not to try terror suspects in Broward County.

These people seem to think that the butterfly ballot is more dangerous than terrorists.

Weren't there supposed to be military tribunals?

Meanwhile a new judge is needed for her seat and the procedures to oust her from it need to be set in motion.

Not to try them in Florida rather. Apparently the trial was in Miami Dade County, not Broward.

Fwiw, I saw this.

Convicted Terror Plotter Padilla Sent to 'Supermax' Prison"

MIAMI (AP) -- Convicted terrorism plotter Jose Padilla is now at a Colorado federal prison known as Supermax for its strict conditions.

Bureau of Prisons officials confirmedFriday that the 37-year-old Padilla will serve his sentence of just over 17 years at the prison in Florence (Colorado).

It's the same facility that houses convicted "Unabomber" Theodore Kaczynski, September 11th attacks plotter Zacarias Moussaoui, and Eric Rudolph, who was convicted of the 1996 Olympics bombing in Atlanta.

Padilla was convicted in August of three terrorism-related charges in Miami federal court. He was held for 3 1/2 years as an enemy combatant on suspicion of plotting with al-Qaida to detonate a radioactive "dirty bomb" in the U.S.

Those charges were later dropped.

Padilla's current release date is February 9th, 2021.
