Starbucks Corp., the company that popularized the $4 cup of coffee, is testing a $1 cup and free refills of some of its offerings.
The Seattle coffee giant is experimenting with selling the $1 "short" brew in the Seattle area, spokeswoman Valerie O'Neil confirmed.
The eight-ounce short size isn't on Starbucks's menu but has long been ordered by in-the-know patrons. Typically, a short, brewed coffee would sell for around $1.50, although that can vary by several cents depending on the store. Starbucks is also testing the offer of free refills for traditional-brewed coffee in the Seattle area.
Ms. O'Neil wouldn't elaborate on the specifics of the tests or say how many stores are offering it. She said the tests aren't indicative of any new business strategy.

Does “short brew” mean it won’t be burnt?
It means they are using recycled grounds.
No, it just means it'll be brewed and served by someone under 5 foot.
1$ and free refills is an excellent bargain....
They have a maximum of $.08 investment in their most expensive menu item.
They can afford charging a buck.
I say the stock rises 2 bucks tomorrow. Or two shorts.
Although, I wonder how many I need to consume to make traveling to Seattle worthwhile.
Huh? $4.00?
“Does short brew mean it wont be burnt?”
That’s why I call ‘em Charsucks.... ;)
I’ll tell you one thing- when I was there, I got addicted to coffee bigtime. The weather demands it, there’s like this compulsion you can’t escape.
A regular coffee at Starbucks in my area is around $1.80, but the lattes, expressos, and other things can hit four bucks.
I still laugh when the hipsters behind the counter call themselves “baristas”...and expect a tip for handing out a cup of coffee. Whatever.
Yeah, I’ve read that Seattle has more rain and suicide than any other large city in the country. Just about everybody up there is a huge coffee addict. New Orleans is the same way. Coffee and chicory so strong you have to scrape your teeth after a cup.
Oh, I agree. I visited store #4 on the way to class at the UW every morning in the winter of 87.
Yes, Seattle has all those tall bridges...and it the last major city before Canada. and the sun only shines 1 of 3 days.
No, it just means it’ll be brewed and served by someone under 5 foot.
Smart a**,
I resemble that remark...
Haha. I agree; it has to be the worst coffee I've ever tasted. One of my clients (a big company) had a Starbucks outlet on the main floor at the other end of the building from the cafeteria. On my first visit there, I got a 'large regular', added a little cream and sugar -- then took it back and told them it was burnt. The looks on their faces was priceless, when I told them they'll never beat out WaWa's coffee over here. (WaWa is similar to 7-11, local to the Philly/NJ/MD area.) There's a few Starbucks around, but few I know will go out of their way to go there.
