—yep—after they get through fixing baseball they can move on to medicine—

Yeah, I am sure those two are listed in the Constitution as authorized duties of Congress. </sarc>

A sane electorate would boot these clowns out on their butts.

Your comments about cholesterol are basically attacking a strawman. The "bad actor" in the cholesterol family is LDL (low-density-lipoproteins)--which levels DO correlate strongly with circulatory plaque problems.

Oh, and you're wrong about statin therapy not affecting the other factors. The "C-reactive protein" is an indicator of an inflammatory problem with the circulatory system. Statins also have an anti-inflammatory effect. I talked to my doctor specifically about that, and what he said was that because I was already on Lipitor, I could forget about it--I was already on the best treatment available.

Jarvik also admitted he did not take the drug until after he began working on the commercials, and began taking the drug about one month after beginning the ads.

Oops. That may present a tiny problem.

(I'm still heartbroken that Mickey Mantle didn't really eat Wheaties.)

BINGO!!! Anything but cut the size of government to pay off the debt and balance the budget.

They call a meeting, serve up some bottled water, pass the mirror or crack pipe, tell some jokes, figure where they're gonna meet after work for drinks, and then decide how much they're gonna spend with our dollars on the bimbo (corporations, market sector) for their gang bang (screw out of money) and then how much the cut for the pimps (the lawmakers) on the gov 'doing it's job' to make a few squeaky wheels (some in public, or another group of businesses) feel good.

Maybe a poor analogy, a little too graphic, but still, a shake down cause they have the power to do so.

It’s not LDL and that theory has been debunked. After that proved to be inavalid they came up with the “oxidized LDL” theory...also erroneous. The bottom line is they can’t prove a causitive relationship between Tot cholesterol LDL or oxidized LDL and heart attacks period and they never will because they are not the cause. started in 1996 The arterial plaques are composed of ~3% LDL C and 50%+ Lipoprotein a.

A multi-million dollar study with 10s of thousands of test subjects was launched in 1996 that was intended to once and for all silence the statin “deniers” It went on for 6 years when all of the sudden it quietly disappeared. A later statement cited “logistical problems” as the reason for it’s demise. The truth is they saw after six years they would be able to prove absolutely nothing and defunded it.

And yes you are correct concerning the anti-inflammatory properties of statins but after all that is a secondary (side effect)of the drug and is not what you are buying them for. There are multitudes of safe, far cheaper anti-inflammatory medications that have few if any side effects that are available and equally if not more effective.

I am not trying to convince you of anything but there is a lot of research out there that should cause much of the conventional wisdom to be questioned. It’s totally up to you to either look into it or ignore it completely.

My first suggestion would be “The Great Cholesterol Con” by Dr Malcolm Kendrick. It’s very informative and a surprisingly fun read.

Be nice to know what major donor to these two would gain if sales of Lipitor declined

No. Jarvik’s artificial heart was not small enough to fit in the cavities of Liberals and function properly in an big empty space. The heart was designed on the average Joe (moderate, conservative, but the middle class hard worker).

I don’t think prescription drugs ought to be advertised at all... but reading this article, I cannot find even the slightest hint of impropriety (much less criminality) by Jarvik. Doesn’t Congress have better things to do than interrogating private citizens about their opinions?

“Maybe, but statins are one of the most over-prescribed under performing drugs of all time.”

irrelevant

the issue is the venue - Congress - which, under it’s leftist leadership thinks it is the executive, the judiciary and the federal regulatory agencies as well - just like any Marxist people’s assembly would

Maybe but Lipitor took me WAY down from dangerous to normal overnight. Exercise and diet was not working.

Ditto. Post heart attack too.

Of course, this is only good news if high cholesterol is really a problem.

Have you heard of the VAP cholesterol test? I was tested and told I have the hereditary bad type of cholesterol....little, dense LDL or something like that....I do not take any drugs for it....but, my CRP did go way up a few years ago (7, I think) and now it’s around 1.6....just wondering what you know, since you seem well informed.

I don’t get this at all. Why can’t free citizens in a free nation endorse anything they want?

VLDL, very low density lipoprotein. It’s a fraction of total cholesterol and is general determined by taking your triglyceride reading and dividing it by 5. So if you have a triglyceride reading of 150 your VLDL would be 30.

I would say that VLDL is only detrimental to ones health in that it is a direct indicator of triglycerides. TGs are an indicator of calories ingested therefor the higher the TGs in your system the more “excess” calories you are taking in (generally excessive carbs). Excess carbs leads to insulin resistance and type II diabetes which ARE directly correlated with heart disease.

CRP, and many think (me included), cholesterol are both indicators and responses to inflammation, generally chronic inflammation. So far being a causitive are rather an indicator of other health issues.

Never forget that cholesterol is both neccessary to all cell functions but also acts in a “protective” function in our bodies.

The Democrats take the Zaphod Beeblebrox approach,”If there’s anything more important than my ego, I want it caught and shot”. The current Congress is going to investigate anyone and anything that is more popular than they are.

"Is he entitled to appear here and prescribe or give the impression he can prescribe prescription pharmaceuticals for patients?" Dingell said. "I think the law in every state says, no he's not, because he can't prescribe medicine in any state we can find."

Excerpt from: Public Statement by Dr. Jarvik

For the past two years, I have been the national spokesman for Lipitor. My work in the field of artificial heart spans 36 years, including inventions contributing to the first permanent total artificial heart used in a patient (the Jarvik 7 heart), and the invention, development, and clinical application of a miniature, silent heart assist device (the Jarvik 2000 heart) that has sustained a patient in good health for 7½ years, much longer than any other artificial heart in the world.

I do not practice clinical medicine and hence do not treat individual patients. My career is in medical science. I have earned Bachelors, Masters, and MD degrees, and I have received honorary Doctor of Science, Doctor of Engineering, and Doctor of Medicine degrees. I am presently President and CEO of the company that manufactures the Jarvik 2000 heart. I have collaborated closely with many top surgeons and cardiologists from dozens of leading medical centers in the United States, Europe, and Asia. I have been named Inventor of the Year and have received a Lifetime Research Achievement Award among other honors. The Jarvik 7 and Jarvik 2000 hearts have been displayed at the Smithsonian Institution as part of their exhibit called “Treasures of American History.”

I have the training, experience, and medical knowledge to understand the conclusions of the extensive clinical trials that have been conducted to study the safety and effectiveness of Lipitor. Also, Pfizer submits advertising concepts in advance to the FDA for review and comment. The statements included in the ads fairly represent the scientific truth about Lipitor, which the public has a right to know, and which Pfizer is entitled to teach.

I accepted the role of spokesman for Lipitor because I am dedicated to the battle against heart disease, which killed my father at age 62 and motivated me to become a medical doctor. I believe the process of educating the public is beneficial to many patients and I am pleased to be part of an effort to reach them. I am not a celebrity. I am a medical scientist specializing in advanced technology to treat heart failure who understands that no one in his or her right mind would want an artificial heart if it could be avoided with preventive medicine.
