Idealistically...in Boortz's book....you may be correct.
But until it is actually implemented through congress's barter-backscratching, you simply cannot say one way or another what it will be.
IMO, that's the only real divide among freepers from Xcamel to Manfitty---the idealists who think the NewTex is ideal, and us skeptics who think that anything that goes through Congress will only make matters worse.
I like a fine steak, too. But I know that once it goes through the grinder it's just hamburger.
Heck with a FT. REDUCE GOVERNMENT SPENDING!
How long have you lived on this planet, and how many of those years have you followed American politics?
It's just an example of the unnecessarily inflammatory rhetoric on this site. Even is no offense is intended, it's hard not to initially assume some was meant when you first read a phrase like that.
FR has always depended greatly on overheated rhetoric and hyperbole.
But regardless, I do think that my line of questioning was perfectly acceptable given that 6ppc took the claims of politicians trying to impose something with the words “fair” and “tax” in the name at face value.
One really must wonder if anyone who does such a thing has been paying attention all these years.
Where has FreeRepublic failed that we would have members who fall for this still?
"These days?" IMO, this is not new. And I've been part of the ijit-callin'/ijit-called! So I know! =)
FR is Rush Limbaugh's Dittohead audience with a CSPAN host mediating the calls 5 at a time.
The 16th Amendment reads as follows: “The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.”
The Amendment authorizes an income tax, it doesn’t require one.
That's exactly the point I was making with my response...you just said it more succinctly than I did.
Count me among you. I've decided the fair tax won't work for exactly that reason. Congress turns everything it touches into crap...see my tag line for my real opinion of Congress.
Has anyone ever been swayed by any of the rhetoric -inside- FR?
Isn’t it just a running commentary on the outside world?
Other than the Walter Reed protests, does it really have an effect?
Immigration meltdown? Did that do anything? Great. There was no amnesty...and now we have McCain and Hillary Amnesty-pals leading in the primaries?
I'm coming to the heart-breaking conclusion that conservatism can no longer work for that reason.
There's hardly a marketplace for 'the marketplace' anymore.
Today's articles: "Preschoolers out of control" and "Bill Gates refutes capitalism."
Out of this we're going to get a revival of independence and self-reliance in the next generation?
Ugh.
That's obvious to everyone but the FairTax cultists who believe the maxim "you get less of what you tax" does not hold true in this particular instance.
Rhetoric no, but I have changed my mind based on reasoned arguments.
Romney is coming up on McCain fast.
Romney should win Florida, going into Super Tuesday with the wind at his back.
Latest head to head matchups against both Hillary and Obama at Rasmussen puts both Romney and McCain’s showings within the margin or error of one another. This means that McCain doesn’t really have any electoral advantage over Romney when going up against either Democrat.
This is the word that needs to get out.
We have several weeks of MSM spin about McCain having “the best chance of winning” to unravel.
FR does have an impact on the real world, because what is said here influences the leading conservative publications and Rush Limbaugh, and they certainly have an impact on “the outside world.” I’ve personally seen some of my work posted here cited by Rush and used on his website.
What is said here does matter.
Consumption that is localized. The prebate is meant to cover necessary purchases and be one size fits all nationwide.
How do you deal with the now massive heating fuel costs in northern states that would go up 30% overnight?
You can’t live without heat and the fuel costs are now obscene.( I just got a fuel bill for $1150 yesterday!)
Anyone that thinks the RATS would ever allow a one size fits all prebate is smoking crack.
Oh happy day! =)
Rush has an audience of 20 million, 3 hrs a day.
The liberals have the ears of 50 million American children for 7 hours a day, and the rest of the media for the remaining day!
And the only replacement we have for the intellectual heft of Will F Buckley is a Canadian! (Steyn.)
Other than that, I'm an optimist.
Or rents in California.
Which encourages the people who made it that way sell their shoe box house and to move out to red states, buy up a couple of larger houses and carry their leftist infection with them.
The entire fairy tax plan is a pipe dream.
Bada-Bing!
